95 K Oil Leak

Post by Jim Godlewski » Sat Sep 15, 2018 3:15 am

She's dripping off the front mounting plate enough to where I see a few drops on the keel. The engine was rebuilt two seasons ago, runs great and very few hours.
Any ideas on how I should proceed? I'm not an engine rebuilder although if it's something not to involved I could replace some gaskets as long as its not a complete tear down.
Thanks.

So to clarify; the dripping is on the front under the flywheel area?

I am no mechanic. Just a designer, so take with that in mind. I would say a couple drops is kinda normal. But sounds like a seal. I have found that over time these engines kinda get loose nuts. Might be a good idea to just go around and check those. Oil comes out of all sorts of places. I would call your engine rebuilder and ask. As well. But my guess is a main seal.

First put an oil absorbent pad in the bilge. Check the oil level, The K engine has no main seal and will weep oil if over filled. wipe the oil pan down with carb cleaner or laquer thinner to help find out where the oil is coming from. Keep us posted.

Yup, I stand corrected. no Seal, and overfill could be the issue. Simple

A heads up too: if it chronically seems to keep overfilling itself, make sure the fuel pump isn't accidentally pumping gas into the crankcase. Water could be finding it's way into the crankcase too, but you'd see evidence of that in milkshake colored oil.

Oh! Thats a good point as well. Smell the oil. Stuff happens. This has been the summer of head gaskets..

Gotta love a guy who smells his oil once and a while. Think we need to come up with an oil smell-O-meter? Keep that dip stick away from your nose.

Yes,here's photo of the mounting plate and a photo of the oil on the dipstick. Its about 1/4 inch above the third mark.

No smell-o-vision?
Does it smell like gas?

I had to go back and check and yes, I do smell a hint of gas in the oil.

The oil level could just be higher than it should be after your last oil change-assuming you changed it on the trailer. The boat really has to be in the water to get the oil level correct. When its on the trailer the engine angle may be way different and you could inadvertently overfill. When I do an end of season oil change, I leave the level slightly low until the first launch of the summer and then add some to bring it up to the full mark while its at the dock. My Graymarine V8 has an oil filter which I fill with oil when changing to help prime the oil system and bring the level up a bit.

I would suggest pumping some of the oil out to get the level correct and drive around a while to see if the level is rising before removing the fuel pump. It would be the most likely source of gas in the crankcase, if that's what is happening. If the engine were running super-rich, you'd know it by the black exhaust smoke and the smell.

Just looked at your Shutterfly pictures, impressive work you did! My first wood boat was a 1955 17' Sportsman about 300 numbers newer than yours. It was a fun boat that got me started in this crazy hobby. Back then, this on-line resource didn't exist, in fact none of the internet of today existed!

Thank you! Credit goes out to my late brother John who was my partner throughout this entire restoration. This was our first restoration so credit to Don Danenberg as well for putting out the book. That's mostly how we got the job done.
Right before my brother passed we bought the model 100 so that restoration is on me.

The engine starts and runs great. The fuel pump as far as I know has never been rebuilt and I suspect it may be time. Would it be in my best interest to just rebuild it, change the oil and see if that helps?

If you have ethanol in your fuel I’d definitely rebuild it. The older pump diaphragms aren’t ethanol resistant. I hate oil leaks. Good Luck!

If you are in Michigan, the end of the boating season is coming up fast so rebuilding it in the off season makes sense. Change the oil as part of your fall decommissioning as usual. You could have the oil analyzed similar to how aircraft engines are required to do by a company that specializes in this service. No idea the cost, but that might identify the presence of raw gas in the oil. It would also show any other particles like bearing material, aluminum piston material, etc.

I am able to purchase non-ethanol 91 octane fuel at some land gas stations and many marina gas docks in upstate NY. If you aren't able to purchase non-ethanol, make sure the pump rebuild diaphragm, check valves and seals are compatible with ethanol fuel, many old kits were not.

I've seemed to make some headway. Rebuilt the fuel pump and tightened up everything. So far except for the fuel pump cover still seeping like it always has I feel good about the progress. Not sure if the smell O meter is accurate or not. Maybe one more oil change...

It's good that you are obviously learning the "guts" of your engine systems, and sharing them here! (JS knows the parts available.., JG can advise on how they are installed).

Just bear in mind, that the aforementioned engine technology, is like the flat-head, tractor engines your grandfather might have used?

WE were told, in the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, that "IF your engine ISN'T leaking..., ITS OUT OF OIL!!!!

The 'oil-diapers' are a good way to learn your intent?

That goes back to the fifty's and is the first sentence in any British engine manual.

The phrase "manoeuvre (part A) past (part B) whilst separating (part C)" in British manuals translates to it cannot physically be done.

Jim, you say the cover on the oil pump is leaking? Make sure the gasket is installed with the little drain hole towards the bottom. Otherwise the oil accumulates in that area and seeps out around the bail.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

I have also found that the hole in the gasket is smaller and doesn't quite line up with the hole in the block. I usually take a hole punch and make it bigger.

The hole is at the bottom although I did not enlarge it.
