283 engine questions

Postby raintree » Mon Jul 09, 2012 12:46 pm

I have 19'Skiff with a 283, flywheel in the front. There are two issues.
I added two quarts of oil and then took the boat out for a short ride. The next day, my bilge was full of oil and the dipstick read low again. I am not sure if I over filled the sump, or something went wrong with the engine. Any ideas??

When I ran the engine the same day, the temps were around 80 degrees on both sides. Three days later I started the engine to warm it and check the oil again, and the temps on BOTH sides, shot up to 18o degres with no water from the exhaust. Could these two issues be related.

If the oil reads low, it didn't simply overflow into the bilge. Something is causing a leak. Your water temp issues may or may not be related.

Is this boat new to you or have you used it previously without either of these problems?
