Postby Crazy B » Thu May 31, 2012 11:32 am

Looking to replace the steering wheel on my '60 ski boat. Is this an automobile part?

Is there something wrong with the original? Needs to be restored?

I believe it is automotive. Take a look at these threads:

Maybe these posts will help you identify what it is from originally.

Can you restore this one or do you want something different? If the pitting is in the chrome, a rechrome will fix that.

Want to restore this one but VERY expensive (about $3000!).
Talked to a very knowledgable guy in CA who can do it in 4 months.
Suggestions?

This is a difficult wheel to restore. The chrome inserts that are so badly pitted are pressed into the wheel and can't be removed. The rest of the chrome(horn ring, center hub, etc.)is also white metal and every pit must be ground off before "re-chrome". Very intense and expensive, which is why sometimes you see new chrome over the pits. Once you get past the pot metal, the rest of the job isn't so bad. Good luck.

I can guess who you talked with in CA. That guy is ridiculously expensive (not talking about Al).

I wish there were more alternatives for wheel work in general but it is a lost art and only a small handful of people. There was an outfit in AU that does nice work and not as expensive. Can't remember name off the top of my head

There is a free one in the Trading dock from a 55 Continental. Not original, but sure beats spending $3K. See post #3128

Trading Dock was recently updated to drop all the old, non-current ads.

That's a shame. I got more response to the old ads because they were easily found through search engines. It worked better than current printed media. Maybe have an option for "Permanent" ads like Wilson did long ago in the BRASS BELL

Jim;

Certainly a good point and we are listening to everyone's thoughts.

Our intent is to revamp the Trading Dock as it has been neglected for some time.

PS. All the old ads are still in the data base and can be retrieved if we want to bring them back.

I like your idea of an old non-active section though.

Do we really want to keep publishing old ads long after the originator stops paying for them? I would worry that might be a disincentive for people to renew an ad.

That's why I suggested a "Permanent" option. Could have a different fee or be in a different section. Don't have a specific idea. I advertise with a display ad in the BRASS BELL and had several ads on TRADING DOCK. I get absolutely no response from the BRASS BELL ad. At least once a week I got a response from a TRADING DOCK ad that was usually several years old. The trading dock ads are easily found through search engines and produced better results.
