Gauge reconditioning for my XK19

Post by Jeff XK19 » Thu Nov 17, 2011 11:55 am

I'm having the dash and side panels on my 1970 XK19 redone this winter and want to take advantage of having the gauges removed to get them reconditioned. I'd love to get some leads on who does the best job at a reasonable price. I'd also like to get the steeing wheel redone so any help there would also be appreciated.

I use Mark Clawson who does a great job (Mark is listed on this site). Here is a before and after shot.

Hi Jeff,

Just a couple of things to consider. The gauges will look great after restoration and probably worth every penny. However, the steering wheel is probably available in the aftermarket. I was going to restore he wooden steering on a 71 XK19 a few years but found a brand new one. If you have the white wrapped steering wheel, I believe those are available also. I'm trying to find my source, but just moved and things are in disarray.

There is a gentleman named Dan Diehl that has reproduced the plastic/vinyl dashes for these boats also. He has molds for both early and later models. Again, I cannot find his number right now, but he is located in OK.

Good luck, I'll try to find better info and get back to you. Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the information. I do have the white wrapped steering wheel and would love to find a replacement so if you stumble across the information that'd be awesome. I actually have Dan Diehl's information (he's up in Jenks, OK) so I'll reach out to him and see what help he can provide.

Hope the move goes (or went) well.

Regards and Happy Holidays.

Jeff

I can give another plug for Kocian Instruments.

I just got my gauges back.

I'm no expert, but I can't see how anyone can tell they aren't brand new as produced.

I can post up some pics if you need, but they look perfect. The price really was reasonable.

I don't know what your boat has for the tach gauge, but I had Dale convert mine to electronic for a reasonable fee. That saved me $175 in a new tach cable. That really helped on the costs.

Jeff, it will take some searching around this site, but you should be able to find the steering wheel you need.

http://www.grantproducts.com/

I bought the wood wheel there for around $100-$130. Thought that was way cheap and was pleased with the product. Then sold the old one on Ebay, recouped a bit of the cost. Win-win in this case.

I hope Dan can help you with the dash, I think that would be so much easier than trying to repair. Should last without the worry of new cracks also.

Good luck, let us know how this turns out.

Ya'll are giving me some great leads and information. Thanks for the help. I now wish it was all done and I was getting back in the water rather than coming out. Oh the fever!

Now you have all winter to get things right and dream of warm Spring and Summer water.

I have heard good things about both Kocian and Clawson. I believe that someone told me that they prefer Clawson for more modern gauges such as yours. Please do not hold me to that, ask many more questions before a final decision is made. It is so much more important that you are happy with the end product rather than who does the job.

Jeff XK-19

How are things coming along with your boat. You get those gauges done?

What color is your boat?

Post some pics please

Don,

Did you ever get some photos of those Kocian gauges?

Thanks!

I have used both instrument restorers and here are a couple of photo's from each.
The instruments from my 1948 (top 2 pic's) were by Clawson and the instruments from my 1957 (bottom 2 pic's)were by Kocian.
I was happy with both and glad we have them working with us.
