Polished Stainless Steel Flat Stock

Post by DMacDonald » Sat May 02, 2020 1:04 pm

I've got a 1953 Sportsman? I'd like to give the verticle edge of the transom a little extra support by adding a stainless steel strip as seen on many other models. Can anyone tell me the official name of this piece of flatstock and (or) an economical source for polished SS flatstock? 304 or 316?

I think what you mean is called "Transom Bands" or "Quarter Brass"

I believe all of the sportsmen, except perhaps the special sportsman, had transom bands.

The standard placement was on the hull sides with about 1/4” or so space between the band and the end of the hull sides. Nothing on the “corner” or the transom.

Thanks for the reply. I've wondered if mine is a special sportsman. Your comment makes it more likely. I may give adding the band more thought since it may not have been original.

I am only going on the picture contained in Conrad’s book. Not sure I have ever seen one before, or ever heard of it for that matter. Hard to tell whether there are transom bandsor not? Best to discuss with other owners. The special was apparently made in 53 & 54. Looks perhaps like an economy model? The hull numbers are SS-20-001 thru 194.
