Fire extinguisher
What model number or make did 1941 17 ft barrelbacks use for a fire extinguisher. Where could I find one. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Jake
Re: Fire extinguisher
I'm hoping that you're looking for a period correct extinguisher for use as a prop, not for fire fighting. The old ones used Pyrene as the extinguishing agent (carbon tetra chloride) a known carcinogen and were way undersized for fighting a real fire. Also not USCG rated for today and it was discovered that when it came in contact with hot metal, it produced phosgene gas (chemical weapons)! Mount the polished brass one to look period correct where it can be seen, but keep a 5 pound modern extinguisher on board for the real deal.

Re: Fire extinguisher
E-Bay lists quite a few Pyrene extinguishers in, as usual for E-Bay, a wide range of prices. Finding an empty one in need of polishing might be the most economical way to go.

Re: Fire extinguisher
There used to be a website on the topic that had all the catalog info. Its litterally different every two years. Someone may have a screen grab of that chart. It was well done and now a dumb plumbing site? UGH. If you can score a ACCSESORY catalog from 1941 there will be one photo in there. I might have a photo someplace of my 1941 with the extinguisher on it. I think???????????? this is the one, its on ebay, the seller seems to know his stuff. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-GENERA ... SwR2RaJfYJ

Re: Fire extinguisher
Found a photo and the one on ebay is the one I had. The one on ebay is insane perfect. Only puts out vintage fires! HA. And about 70 bucks more than they go for, but its flawless.

Re: Fire extinguisher
The one on EBAY, and all of them are pretty useless without the mounting bracket. Harder to find than the extinguisher. 1941 Accessory catalog shows a neat fire suppression system but no shots of a brass one.

Re: Fire extinguisher
There was this fellow Dan Sakas, who restored and sold them. wrote a great article about the different, mainly pyrene, fire extinguishers used in prewar days. It would have appeared in the Brass Bell about 12 years ago or so. Try searching for it in the archives. I believe there was an overlap of models around '41 or so, and also that cc used some other brand, too, if memory serves (general?) but the article will make it clear. Don't know if he is still around?
only for show. they contained carbon tetrachloride, as mentioned above. a killer to breathe.

Looking for the correct Fire extinguisher for my ‘36 Runabout
Gents,
I’m looking to add a period-correct fire extinguisher to my 1936 19’ Runabout (hull #48099). This is just for display in the boat as I have working units on board in case I have an actual problem. While my hull card notes that my boat came with one from the factory, there’s no mention of the make or model. In trolling around the internet and researching various forums - and as confirmed in this thread - there appears to be consensus that www.vintagefe.com is (was) the best resource. Unfortunately he has shut down his website at some point over the last year so I’m struggling to find the details for what’s I’m looking for. I’m told that it’s likely either a Pyrene or a QuickAid, but hopefully you guys can help. I also need the correct bracket as there is no mount in the boat.
Many thanks for any help on this and I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Re: Fire extinguisher
Fantastic, thanks Jim. I’ve seen a few of these floating around on EBay in different states of finish, but none of the sellers were able to confirm which units were correct for my ‘36 CC. Thanks for confirming what I need and I look forward to finding the right one to add along with the new 5200 bottom that Steve Bunda is putting on Lake Girl this winter
