Boot stripe and hull side white gloss or semi?

Post by Tmalko » Sat Mar 06, 2021 9:00 am

I have a 57 CC 27’ Sedan, what finish of white paint on the hull sides was the original, gloss, semi or flat? Also where can you get a blue color boot stripe paint for the same boat, year? Thanks
Tom

As I recall painted hulls were finished "satin" , may have been semi gloss, definitely not gloss. Someone on here knows for sure but an accessory manual from period would list hull side paints as well as boot stripe colors. May have one in club archives. Mine are not readily available at the moment or I would check.

Not sure of the sheen of the paints way back but most of the hull paints today are gloss. It gives better protection if it is gloss and hard like a Pettit Easyepoxy white. That's what we always use and is what on my boat and its been on there for a few years now and looks great.

The 1957 Chris Craft equipment and accessory catalog lists hull side paints as "semi-gloss". Many of these actually appeared satin to nearly flat depending on color and application. This is consistent with my memory of those on our showroom and shop. Boot Stripe is gloss. Today you see gloss being used. Looks great on a very very fair hull but is not original. Its your boat, do what you like, its only paint. There is a copy of the 57 accessory catalog in the club archives.
