2 1/2" copper exhaust

Post by Tightline5 » Sun Jul 31, 2011 9:17 pm

Everyone Take notice!!!! I need a 2 1/2" pipe SOOOOO I with the help of Don D. are going to try and organize a copper pipe order like we did two years ago. I cannot tell you exactly what the end cost will be, but we will hold the price to our cost. If you followed our last adventure, those of you who pertisipated know what a great deal everyone got. In that regard, there were also many who wished they had placed a larger order, and others that missed the boat entirely. This will be a ONE TIME OFFER!!!.

ALSO I WILL NOT POST THE END COST ON THE WEB, BUT WILL NOTIFY EVERYONE INDIVIDUALLY, and request that you do the same. Please respect my request on this.

What I will need is
#1 How many pipe needed.
#2 will need year, model, length, motor, elbow # for each pipe.
#3 If you have a pattern pipe, or can make a pattern.

Important If you have a pattern pipe you would be willing to let us borrow this would be a great help. I will be checking my single bend 2 3/4" pipe against some deluxe models at upcoming events to compare.
The more pipe we order the cheaper this will be. I still have 4 -5 pipe of various sizes and I have sold a few so order order order!!!
I will also have a pattern pipe for the 22' Shepherd straight 6 and big block hemi.:):)

Contact me @ [email protected] and make sure you put copper pipe in the subject line or if you don't and I don't know you, you will be deleated. Also (434) 847-7541 or (434) 942-8076

2 1/2" copper pipe

Post by Lazybeaver » Thu Oct 20, 2011 7:02 am

I wish I had known about this event. Anyway I spent a lot of time and effort trying to set up a shop to bend my pipe. No one wanted to attempt it. So I saw a video on u-tube of a pipe for a old motor bike being bent. I said to myself I can do that. I will post pics later today and you can see how easy it was? I am so far along with it know or else I would get on the list. If there is a problem with my procedure I may still be on the list. Look for my pics.

How about going to a muffler shop for your pipe and then have it copper plated?

Just out of curiosity, the parts boat I bought has fiberglass pipes. Are these better than the original copper? My copper pipes seem fine, there's some corrosion and pitting in the area where the bathroom sink was leaking but no holes.

Dumb question from a cruiser owner:

What is the issue with 2.5 or 3 inch copper pipe?
Do you guys get it custom bent as well, or have all the elbows put on or what?

We have to get it custom made, custom bent, and then the elbows installed. This pipe is just not produced for common use anymore.[/i]

Peter, on another topic, as a Shepherd owner I did get three sets -(2)of new 2 1/2" x .065 copper bent (candy Cane's) for the 18' - 24' Shepherd runabout's that are setting on my shelf in the shop:) And we are getting ready to bend saftey glass for the Shepherd 50's and up 22'curved windshields at cost.

Large copper pipe up to 4 inch is still produced industrially by at least a half dozen makers... the food industry and a couple of other chemical industries still use it.

Bending it well? Well now that takes some equipment.

Peter, THAT"S great news, so my three year search for 3 1/2" and 2 1/2" in any quantity under 2000 lb was right under my nose all along. That is super good news. Please forward that info to me as I have orders for 20 sticks 10' long and about the same for 3 1/2" also.

Peter couldn't resist, take no offence. I have been at this awhile. I can get 6' sticks from McMaster Carr in 2 1/2" but some times I need longer, and they will not sell wholesale to me like Canadian Brass would even with my tax ID #. And 3 1/2" just is not made anymore to my knowledge, but if you have researched it and found a source, I would love to know, we could help alot of people.

As for bending, I have a company that can bend anything perfectly in copper. They also make the exhaust systems for the Preditor Drones for the Gov.

AND do you have any good contacts for 1948 - 49 Shepherd hardware?????????

On the second question:

Millar Potter Boat Restoration
Manotick Ontario
613 692 3455

and this guy... who may know more contacts than anyone

Peter Breen
Rockwood Ontario
519 856-9113
Eml: [email protected]

Both of them have done Shepherd resto's so they may have some ideas.

On the second question...
I may have spoken without conferring on exactly the size you need... If it is 2.5 inch OD then it's a little more difficult. That was a Canadian size mostly, and Alaskan Copper list it, but don't make it anymore, nor do they make 3.5 OD.

H&H Tube in Michigan will generally do those sizes, and since they are smaller, the minimums are manageable for them, and you.

Great Lakes Copper in Alabama and London Ontario may also make this size, but they don't sell to the public, only to wholesale.

Ansonia Copper and Brass do keep some of these sizes on hand, but as I said, I might have spoken too quickly with getting an exact measurement and wall thickness. They do a lot of different alloys too, including phosphor bronze and aluminum bronze. They're in Connecticut.

Continental Steel and tube in Florida do large size brass and copper as well, but again, I should have asked exact size.

McMaster Carr? They're just as surly to deal with as ever I see. Useless gits.

Peter, I have spoken to Peter Breen, but he doesn't have alot of parts. I know Jim Potter well and we just spoke today. He has been in FL. visiting his son. He did give me two new contacts to try . I need that 48 curved stern pole and light ass. also the 48 bow pole like on King's Ransom, and the 3" port/star light lens. If all else fails I will be at Gavenhurst and with any luck I will see the parts there and they will let me take measurments / and some tracings and I can then reproduce it myself.

I will try some of your sugestions but I would only need about 1000 lb of each and most don't want to make a run that small.

If you could take a plaster mold of the sidelight lens, I guess you could cast it.

Let me think about anyone else that might have those parts, but Jim and Peter would be pretty aware of any sources in Ontario. Jim must be getting up there, I have not spoken to him in a lot of years. A good guy, have his book etc.

I need red and blue 3" side light lens, curved stern pole and light lens holder, tear drop bow pole. If you go to Shepherd boats, com and look under registered boats 1948 or 49 King's Ransom, he has all the correct parts. Also the large bimini top frame.

Hi everyone.
This post never goes away and nobody has posted to it in 4 years. In fact this subject dates back to when I was looking for pipe for my SeaSkiff about 5-6 years ago.
Am I missing something here? As I read this thread it appears that sourcing copper pipe is something of a problem. Unless there is something special you're looking for thin wall copper pipe in 2-1/2", 3" and 3-1/2" is no problem whatsoever. My local plumbing supply house stocks these sizes and more in 10 and 20 foot lengths. Getting it formed is another issue all together, I'm still looking for someone to do that.
I just got 2-20 lengths of 3" to replace the exhaust hose currently in the 23 commander I'm working on. Unless I can find someone to bend the pipe I will be using copper fittings and soldering. Interestingly enough the copper pipe is cheaper than exhaust hose!
It would be good to get some feedback from anyone out there that may be looking for pipe.

Craig,
Is it real 3"OD? What wall thickness? Where did it come from? When this post started we went in and had 2 1/2" OD custom made. While you can find 2 1/2"OD it is usually the wrong wall thickness.

Good Point Jim, I will check and report back.
Sorry for my ignorance but you asked where it came from? like what mill? domestic or imported? Just want to clarify.
Just for my information what wall thickness was the material used back in the day?

My pipe is coming from V.P. Supply in Rochester, NY. It's regular plumbing pipe available at any plumbing supply store.
2-1/2" schedule"M" has a wall thickness of .065, 3" is .072. There is no 2-1/2" schedule DWV but 3" is .045.
2-1/2" M is $11.14/ft and 3" M is $14.82/ft.
I did not price 3" DWV but I will get that info if you need it.
