Frost/Freeze Plugs

Post by kenkix » Thu Jun 16, 2022 1:11 pm

Somehow, in spite of storing my boat in the same way I have since I've had it, there must have been some water in the cooling chamber last fall. One of the freeze/frost plugs popped out, one is hanging in there barely.

I have run the motor and it seems fine, there is also no water in the oil. How does one put them back in? In another exchange in this forum, someone just said to "pop it in". How?

There are two types. One has sides and is referred to as "cup style" I use a socket to install. The other is like a large contact lens. "Disc style" I'd replace that style and install with a large punch.

Trying to upload a photo, but I can't remember how. To me it looks like yout description of a brass "contact lens."

When you say you use a large punch, you mean I just put it in place and impact it back into its hole? It has (of course) some rust on the inside of the hole. Should I try to clean that up?

If it is a disc style I would replace it. Yes clean whatever you can.

Thank you very much for your help. I replaced the plugs, and the boat is running great. I'm sorry that I am such a mechanical doofus -- neither my dad, nor anyone else, ever taught me about engine mechanics. This is the peak of my skill. Your advice gave me the confidence to give it a go.

That happened to me on my KFL this spring. 2 frost plugs and also the thrust plug on the end of the water pump. Some how all the water didn’t drain out. I popped everything back in and tapped the edges of the frost plugs lightly with a large punch and so far they have held in place. I’ve been winterizing the same way for years but….. good thing for frost plugs!
