1956 Sportsman 17 K Engine Prop shaft length
I recently purchased the boat. The owner, who has since passed, bought a K engine and had it rebuilt. It has never been in the boat. There was no engine in the boat when I bought it, but the motor mounts were not Mounts for a K engine. The prop shaft was in the boat, but I suspect it was from a different engine. Can anyone tell me what the proper shaft length is?
Thanks,
Greg
Thanks,
Greg

I do not have a length but once you get the K engine in the boat with the correct mounts and the shaft coupler on the transmission you should be able to insert a round piece of something long enough to extend three and three quarters of an inch past the strut. That is the length of my prop shaft. If the shaft you have is too long just have it cut. Hope that helps.

Jim,
Thanks very much. This presents an issue of knowing where to position the engine in the boat. Since the K engine was not in the boat when I received it and the mounts that were in the boat were for some other engine, I'm going to have to figure out where it should be positioned in order to determine where to cut the prop shaft or to figure out what length prop shaft I need.
BTW - You did a superb job on your boat. As I get into the renovation, I'm sure I will have some more questions for you.

Thanks Greg,
Do you know what engine the boat had originally? I'm sure it was a Hercules 6 cylinder. There should be some tail tell signs of where it was unless the stringers and engine risers have been removed. Post up some photos of what you have. Just keep the image size small or it will not post.

Here are some pictures of what I have. I have never seen how the motor mounts are bolted to the stringers in a Chris Craft. Do you have any pictures. Does the motor mount bolt go through the stringers or just into the wedged blocks. If they go through the stringers, I don't understand how you would adjust the mounts so the prop coupling is true to the transmission coupling.

Those motor mounts should give someone a clue as to what motor was in there. Unfortunately I only know K.
Check your prop. Shaft. It should be 1 inch diameter also.
You have a sportsman so only so much wiggle room under the motor cover. Also, your aft limit is the prop. hitting the rudder.
If your running gear is there (looks it) then drop the engine in, line up the prop. shaft and check the rudder clearance and motor cover position.
