Greetings,
I am new to this club, however I have been reading these forums for some time...I figured it was time to join.
I have a 1958 25' Sea Skiff with a 283ci flywheel forward (single screw). I am rebuilding the top end and want to replace the cam and lifters.
My question:
Can I remove the camshaft by removing the Paragon transmission but WITHOUT removing the rear bracket/bell housing?
I recently rebuilt the transmission and I can R&I the trans with relative ease.
It looks like I can remove the cam gear and timing chain without removing the housing, but I am not certain that the camshaft will clear the housing. The picture is of the timing chain, crankshaft, and camshaft with the bell housing in place (transmission removed). Thanks in advance!

Housing has to come off. The end play adjuster is in the way.

Re: camshaft replacement 283 flywheel forward
Thanks for the prompt reply. Ideally I’d like to do this without removing the engine from the boat. I imagine I can fabricate a small gantry to support/straddle the block and remove the housing...any information or advice is greatly appreciated. Also, I have never adjusted end play on this format of engine...it there a specific tolerance I can measure with a feeler gauge? Or is there here a series of shims? I’m sure I’ll see how it is set up upon disassembly; but it’s nice to know what to anticipate.
