327Q hull clearance 1955 Sportsman

Post by farmer » Sun May 05, 2019 12:59 pm

I am currently trying to install a flywheel forward 327 into my 17 ft sportsman. I am having clearance issues width wise and depth. To get alignment close to what I need the oil pan is resting on a frame. The distance between the longitudinal 2x4s is also making things rather tight. Can I remove the offending frame without adding one or will this create a problem with the integrity of the hull floor. The boat has a 5200 bottom (not done by me ) so I'm thinking it should be ok but I'd like to know what others have done to get this motor installed.

How far forward would it have to be moved to get the clearance you need?

Would a different shaft angle solve the problem ?
If so you could shim the strut and or shaft log.

The frame is resting right about in the middle of the pan. This boat had no motor when I got it but I was told they had used it with a 327 small block chevy. But after working on this for awhile I'm thinking it may have been a reverse rotation because I also got a 1to1 velvet drive with the boat and a righthand prop.
So I went at it again and found that if I use the same mounting holes that were already there in the front I would need a longer prop shaft. But in doing that it would bring the engine up about 3/4 of an inch because of the angle of the shaft.Which helps with my clearance issues. It doesn't eliminate them but does make it doable. The only drawback is the extra cost of a longer prop shaft.
I am looking for a new one.Does anyone have a good source ?

It will ride better with the engine farther forward.

That was another question mark for me. I don't know where the weight should be in the hull. I guess I can always change it if it's way off.

On the shaft I have had good luck with Henry H Smith & co.

If your 327 flywheel forward conversion is the 283 Chris Craft conversion parts. It should drop right in. Chris craft designed the flywheel forward engine to drop in on the same mount block using the the same front holes that the K used. When it rest on the original blocks it will be very close to the correct angle. Prop shaft would have to be 1/2" longer with the manual gear box.

The 58 and 59 models of your boat came with the Chris 283 V-8 in it. 58 and 59 are the same hull design with blonde added to the deck.

If using another manufacturers conversion you will have to make modifications. A lot of the engine manufacturers in the 60's made flywheel forward conversions.

Pictures would help identify your conversion.

I don't have pictures at the moment. I have to add 3 3/4 inches to the length of the shaft to make it work with the motor in the front mounting holes. It looks like everything will line up now but I'e changed the blocking to adjust for the increase in height of the motor. I'm going to try it like that and see how it goes.I painted the bilge today so I should get the motor in when the prop shaft comes.
