Appropriate Dinghy

Post by whamm511 » Tue May 27, 2014 3:36 pm

I'm nowhere close to needing this yet but for some reason I can't get it out of my head so I thought I'd ask for ideas from you guys. I've currently got a Fibreglas dinghy, approx. 8' in length, a twin pontoon looking hull which is quite popular I think as I see several of them in pics, especially out in Seattle/NW Pacific area. I acquired a 1949 CC Challenger Outboard engine to use with my Dinghy. The engine # shows it to be from the very first week of production.

Now not just because I don't like Fibreglas but because I just think a beautiful little wooden boat would look so much better behind my Connie I would like to try and find one. I had thought it would be nice to get one of CC kit boats to use but I don't want a pram style bow and CC's non Pram style boats are all 12' or longer. That would be too big. It needs to be about 8' long. The beam of my Connie is 12' but it's closer to 10.5 at the Transom.

I see one that looks like what I think I'm after in pics that I have seen of the Maranee out Seattle Way. Do any of you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks!

Bill

Penn Yan made a ton of small wooden row boats and such. The better known cartoppers are usually 12' or 14' but there were smaller models as well. Here is a 10' on ABA to give you an idea.

Or you can contact these guys to learn to build your own 9' replica

http://www.flbm.org/pdfs/dinghy-series.pdf

They made a ton in the 7'-10' range. The hard part will be finding a survivor that is for sale, but they are definitely out there, and probably not hard to reproduce.

Here is one. They are pretty darn proud of that restoration job based on the asking price but...

Good question!

I have been thinking the same thing, but have been more involved with the Connie to worry about the dingy yet.

We also have a glass one that a friend gave us when they moved out of the area.

My FIL has an old wood pram in his barn, but he thinks it is 12' and I have the same challenge you have with length.

5K for the dingy?

Heck that is almost 1/2 what I paid for the Connie, and I overpaid.

What's a dingy, Oh I know, its a @#$%^&*

In the PNW they are called yacht tenders.

A yacht tender is a 20+ foot power boat with at least one v8 engine and a six figure price tag. It is used to go up and back from an 80+ foot luxery craft known as a yacht. An absurdly simple task given its price tag and capabilities. An 8-12 foot open row boat, with or without a small displacement motor would be a dinghy. You use a dinghy to get to your cruiser or sail boat because that is the cheapest, most practical way to get the job done.

Calling your dinghy a yaucht tender would be like saying your Geo Metro is a limousine.

My yacht tender has a dinghy. :)

Still, I want to see Troy's Dingy (as in dark and dingy)

I liked the Penn Yans and the Mintos. I wasn't sure that the Minto that's for sale is wood. Do you know? These are great suggestions! Thanks so much!

Who makes the boat that ships the oars in such a way as to be handles and has a wheel that can be deployed to move it around on land like a wheel barrow?

Actually up here in the ANE we just call them DINKS.

"I'll row ya out ta the boat in tha dink"

"Heck let the kids play with tha dink"

"Nice dink ya got theya"

Kind of reminds me of the Old Chuck Berry song.
