Chris Craft Shoot Out!!!!

Post by Don Ayers » Fri May 25, 2012 8:38 am

Guys and Gals;

If you could image a shoot out between a new Chris-Craft and an original model what would that be???

I think we would have to think big iron for the old model.

Ideas??

Shoot out

How about my old 1940 27' racing runabout with its A-120-A race engine (now owned by Dana Mecum)?

I love Al's Miss Arrowhead but I think there would be an interesting match-up between the new Lancer 20 and an X-19 like Alex W's. You could also throw in a 19' Racing Runabout. What about a Silver Arrow vs a Silver Bullet?

I think a shoot out would be great fun, but I think it should include more than shear speed.

similar horsepower, & compare efficiency, top speed, turning radius, MPG, things like that.

You do realize the classic would be killed in every category........

Not just a classic. Any mid engine inboard without a stepped hull will get crushed by a rear engine stern drive with trim adjustment. Even a brand new hull design like the ski/wake boats. The difference in top speed for two boats with equal weight and hp will be over 10 mph and maybe 20 mph or more. For the same reasons, the fuel economy at the same speed would be much better. Steering in reverse would be no contest either!

Well, not quite every category. My 62 ski-jet will turn inside a smaller radius than any modern CC model. Actually, it will beat them in any test as long as the lake chosen for the shoot out is less than 12" deep, but that is not really being fair.

I think Mitch lapointe's "scamp" 16' stepped bottom barrel back vs the silver bullet. Sure big iron is cool don but I like the BMW M3 mentality of getting as much hp Out of a small package. Plus 3 carbs is sweet.

How about Miss Arrowhead and the modern boat each towing four skiers? That might be an interesting test. Miss Arrowhead would hardly know that they were back there. I've towed Marty Feletto as a single and it was like he wasn't there. Lots of torque with 375 HP at 2800 RPM.
