I just bought the boat and it has been painted. I have seen pictures of some that are painted on the sides, but have mahogany topside surfaces. What was the original as far as paint and mahogany??

Thanks in advance.

Hi jby, as a kid growing up on lake Fenton in Michigan. There was a lot of wood boat's from that ere. None were painted. im sure your boat's hull is all mahogany. even if the hull is marine plywood it would have some sort of varnish sealant/finish. It show's the beauty of the wood!. A copper bronze anti fowling paint on the bottom and maybe a painted water line, about 3/4 of an inch wide, red or white. Get rid of the paint !! mike

The '57 and '58 Cavaliers had the C-C red mahogany stain on the deck and hull sides. There is a 3-5 inch wide strip of white polyurethane paint, dulled with a sheen reducer to an egg shell to satin sheen. I used from 10 to 12 coats of the high gloss Interlux polyurethane varnish to build up a nice grain free hull finish. Wet sand with 220 wet/dry paper during the build coats and use 320 or 400 before the final coat.

The red stain was "Vermillion"

Thanks Ron and Greg.......... I tried to strip the paint, but it revealed an extensive amount of prior hull damage that had been repaired. I removed all the paint, did extensive repairs and I am almost done painting...........

I will post some pictures soon.

Thanks again
