Cavalier 36' Seastrake 1967 in Sweden
Hi!
I am new to the club since the end of last year, with a 1967 36' Seastrake. I happened to buy the boat for a small amount since it have had a couple of hard years on land after the former owner deceased. Poorly covered and not properly blocket up on the trailer its stored on, it will need some attention. Port motor started and sounds very healthy stb motor require som massage though... After a check out of the hull with a rubber mallet, it seems be able to be put in the water. Bad parts of the hull is there, but all well above the water line.
The starboard motor showed up som bad elbows on the manifold and cause of that it have been standing water in the aft cylinder pair, so the motor is going out for a -88 van motor i found on the scrap yard for a really low amount and it should also have very low milage. The motors in my boat is 2x Chrysler LM318, and there is a lot of these motors around here in sweden from scrapped 80's vans. The problem now is the log style manifolds, wich is quite ok, but needs new elbows and since the other motor have the new type of center rise manifolds, I would like that for the other machine as well. Though is this at the moment out of the budget, so I'm planning to build new elbows my self, as a temporary budget solution. To be continued...

One of the manifolds have a nasty hole, were some brassplugg resided and who made the iron rust away...

I was suprisingly successful in filling the hole with my MAG. It appeared that the manifold probably is not cast iron, but some sort of die cast steel, wich was quite easy welded

I will also present myself: A longhaired guy born on the last days of the 50's, residing in Stockholm Sweden, having my own enterprise in light and videodesign. http://www.plazmadesign.com My boat is docked comfortably at a yatcht club in Stockholm city, just some 15 min walk from my apartment. I have currently the Seastrake but also a 1961 Coronet 22 Explorer, also a plywood boat. 
I do not yet have any really good pics of the Seastrake, since it is currenltly stowed away 250km from where I live...

First, welcome to Boat Buzz. Thanks much for posting photos of your boats, and your handy work on that cast header. Hope it holds up well.
Wow! Interesting that a 36-foot Chris-Craft Cavalier Sea Strake is in Sweden. She appears to be in fairly good condition. I believe these were delivered with Chris-Craft 283's or 327 engines. The Chryslers may be a transplant. My 27-foot Connie received a 318 early after being delivered. The hull card shows that a CC-283 engine was installed at the factory.
Keep us posted on your progress. Hope you are successful in your search for a decent engine to install in your beautiful Sea Strake. Have you contacted The Mariners' Museum to order a research package yet? They will have the original hull card and lots of information on your boat. Go to http://www.marinersmuseum.org/library/#chris-craft to order.

I am in progress with Mariners Museum and looking forth to wat will come up there... I will also do some research with former owner here in Sweden to find out how she found her way here.

Welcome to the Club. That's a great looking Chris Craft. Love seeing photos of work in progress. Are you repowering with Chryslers? Are there very many Chris Crafts in Sweden?

Spent the weekend at the boat. A truck crane was booked for sunday round lunchtime.

I thought that I would be able to use the automotive oil pan, but it was about 30mm to high, so the cast aluminium pan from the old motor had to be transferred along with the oil pump and pickup.

Discovered that the new motor did not have the excenter for the mechanical fuel pump, since it spent its earlier life as a EFI, so I have to look for a electric pump for this motor.
I am also going to use the 4-barrel intake manifold from the old motor, together with the Carter AFB carb

Great to see progress is going well. The crane is huge. We used a fork lift with extended forks on mine. Electric fuel pumps can be dangerous in boats unless certain precautions are applied. Be sure to look into that. There are ways but I am not familiar with them.

The starboard motor is now put together, cranked for oil pressure, but not yet started, cause of some trouble with the fuel pump and possibly bad needle valves in the carb that will make it flow.

There have been progress!
After some really careful cleaning of the carb, and putting the distributor to pieces, get the rust out and some new springs in the motor come to live!

Since I'm using a electric fuelpump, there must be a protective surcuit, so now it have a relay, that draw, when it gets voltage from the alternator aux connector, but also when the starter is engaged, hence the diode, that prevents the starter to engage when there is power from alternator aux.

I have also done some caulking of the hull, to prevent the worst leaks
After a inspection I found some hard old caulking in som joints and where the bottom meets the stern, I could just pull out the old caulking in one long string. No rot there though, so I cleaned the cavity out and filled it with Sika Flex 291i. 1 1/2 tube just there...
Totaly four tubes.
There is more work coming up,but she will be put in the water in middle of may!!!

Great Progress!
Good to know that you installed a safety relay on the electric fuel pump. Past problems have been when the fuel pump keeps pumping when the ignition switch is left in the "on" position but the engine is not running. Your relay should prevent that from happening. Your setup requires alternator output to switch the relay on. That sounds safe.
I saw a report on one that stopped briefly to refuel. He turned the ignition switch off to kill the engine but then turned it back on to listen to his radio while they filled his tank. When he went to restart, there was an explosion in the bilge. After investigation they found that the fuel pump kept pumping fuel because his ignition switch was left "on", and the fuel went into the bilge. He suffered minor burns but his boat was destroyed.
When I owned the cruiser I always ran the bilge vent fan for a while, then lifted the hatch to sniff and look around before starting the engine. I haven't said this in a while; "Lift & Sniff - Every Time you Start".

Well, it's close now!
I did buy today, a express ticket for Göta Kanal, Swedens most known water way. It is a channel / lock system 190 km and 58 locks with a level of totally 91m, in eastern sweden, from the greatest lake Vänern, out in the Baltic Sea. I'm starting my journey in Kristinehamn by Vänern and go through the channel and then via the Baltic sea coast arcipelago up to Södertälje channel and in to lake Mälaren, to end up in Stockholm, where I'm going to have the boat docked att my yacht club, Totally it is going to be a 230 nautical miles journey in four days, so I hope everything is going to work out, when she is going into the water on monday 11 may. We are starting from Kristinehamn on wednesday 13, after lunch time, so I will have nearly two days getting all ready to run

Wow! What an ambitions sea trial. Hope all goes well for you and your cruiser. Wish that I could come along but Sweden is a long way from home here in Missouri, USA. Here's to a successful journey.

Very well... It became a unforgettable journey with a huge gas bill, since the the tuning of the machines was done in a bit of hurry...
But now she's in place, safely at the dock and don't leaks more than one of the on board pumps can easily handle it...
As you see, she's a bit of a faded beauty, but that will be improved over time, I hope...

I hope to be able to post a little more about the trip, but know i have to do some hard labour, to get my other boat in the water an sold and also earn some to compensate the waste gas money...

But now she's in place, safely at the dock and don't leaks more than one of the on board pumps can easily handle it...

Now she´s on the hard and started some restoration projects.. opened up for fixing the sliding door entrance on SB side...

The swimplatform off to make some repair on the transom. Good thing is that it seems qiute sound expect the hole on the corner, wich is above waterline..

Congratulations on your successful voyage. I really like the way you Swedish guys go about it. Fabricating your own parts and all. Very impressive. In my part of the world on the East Coast we call that Yankee ingenuity. Thanks for the photos.

The struggle continues.. Pulled out the shore power panel and put new shelwes in to carry the 115/230V 4kVA transformer. Relocated it from the floor, so that the lower part of the cabinet can be used for bottles instead...

Good to see that you are still making great progress. Ah, one always needs a safe, convenient place for bottles to be tucked in. Good use of otherwise wasted space. Keep up the good work. And keep us posted!

Got all the parts made for the stb entrance recess. Screwed in place for everything to fit properly and then take apart and epoxi prime/glue and get all in to place again...

Dagg, I like the patches. If the rest is solid and well fastened why not. I replaced the bottom third of my transome and have a couple of nice Dutchmen above the water line. Gives her a little more old boat character.

Tnx Joanroy! This boat is a budget project since it have been quite rough handled by the last owner and also was left badly covered for three years, very hard for a wooden boat in Swedish climate...
I try to give her back some of her lost glory to a useable and charming state...

I just now came upon your thread and very much enjoyed the pictures and storyline. I will have to google the trip you made and look at it on google earth. Sounds cool. Best of luck in your rehabilitation of your cruiser and thanks for the advice on using epoxy. I still can't mend my stem because we are enjoying the last blast of winter in Toronto. It won't be warm enough for a few weeks. Here is a picture of a patch that I installed when we first got our cruiser. It lasted through 20 years of hard service before I removed the entire bottom (as you have seen). It enabled us to use the boat immediately and never leaked a drop. I like your patches too!
