Flipping a 19' Capri hull

Post by rhysaccess » Tue Oct 14, 2014 11:34 am

Howdy all,

After some years of hibernation (building a suitable workshop) - my project of replacing the bottom of my 56 Capri can finally be undertaken.

Despite some reading & searching, I am struggling to grasp the exact details of the often recommended flipping procedure. I'm preparing to construct a pair of free standing wooden gantrys to lift and hold the hull ....but some subtlety eludes me.

Is the recommendation as per the attached diagram, whereby a second (actually third) block & tackle is used to turn the hull from underneath , separate to the support strapping?

Feeling .....a bit stupid. Prefer it not continue.

Thanks & regards,

Rhys

Rhys,
I use an axle with no tires. Put a strap around the boat and one wheel. Do the same with the other wheel. Use two hoist's to lift the axle which lifts the boat off trailer. Use a third hoist to roll the boat over.

Thanks for that Jim,

Interesting spin on the theme.

I suspect I need to focus more on my "bearing" method to allow easier rotation of the strapped mass.

All good.

Cheers,
Rhys

If you support the boat at two places on the horizontal top beam instead of one so that the vertical straps are straight up, you can flip the boat by hand.

I used wheel barrow wheels ( tires removed) mounted on top beam.

You need much less height with the vertical straps and the "squeezing" stress on the boat is less.

There are pictures of this improved rolling set up in this forum.

If you don't find them, search my posts, respond here, or send me a personal message.

Using a single point at the top is dangerous, the boat gets just past vertical and it falls very quickly. Using two points at the top the slings stay in contact with the hull through the rotation.

Thanks for all the advice - I've found more photos and the missing detail is apparent.

Yes, I'd support the boat from two points - not one.....appreciate this isn't clear from my Rorschach's test above.

In fact, all simpler than I imagined. I suspect I may be obsessing.

Thanks & regards,
Rhys

What software did you use to make that great diagram?

Microsoft Visio (it;s better than the diagram suggests)

The hull will probly not require a second block and tackle to "turn" the boat. They flip very easy, thus NOTE THE TIRES ON THE FLOOR!!!!!!!

What do you figure the bare hull on a 18' footer weighs? I am feeling that I will need to reinforce the ceiling in the garage to do this. The garage is 14' x 40', but the ceiling joists are only 2x6's. I am thinking to run a couple of 6x8 beams across the ceiling, and then supporting them with some 4x6 posts.

I would use 2x8 and screw three together rather than a solid 6x8 . Boat is probly 1500 lb stripped at the most,
