Walnut stain

Post by iamallthumbs » Thu Dec 19, 2013 3:26 pm

Does anyone know the history of using walnut stain on Runabout king planks? The Essential Guide indentifies pre war Runabouts with dark planks but post war are all natural decks. My '47 Deluxe 17' has walnut stained king plank and covering boards. Might the stain be a post construction modification?

I believe so, but al benton is the post war 17' runabout expert. I think in general the king planks were either natural or on some models, bleached "blond". No dark walnut stains that i am aware of .

Walnut stain for covering boards etc. was still used on a few models postwar. My late-'54 Racer was one of the very last to use it for covering boards.

Remember, it was always walnut over the red stain, not over bare wood. Totally different look.
