Boat Dollies and Wooden Boats

Post by 1971vet » Tue Mar 02, 2010 11:14 am

I have a 21' Century Coronado on a trailer longer than my work space. I need some feedback on the use of boat dollies to support thr boat while I finish the top sides. The bottom is new and done very well. I was looking at the Hostar dollies and wondered if 2 of these would work and how long could a wood boat stand on these without damage to the bottom if any? The bottom is now double planked.

Boat Dollies

I wouldn't worry too much about The Century sitting on a couple of dollies but I wouldn't leave her on them for years. I would make sure that there is support at the stringers and at the keel. One sitting just ahead of the rear engine mount, and the other probably a third of the way back from the bow. I also would drain the gas tank to reduce excess weight at the stern.

Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

If you don't want to spend all that money for something you will use so seldom, I would go to Northern Hyd. or Harbor Freight type place and buy two of those heavy duty wood framed caster type dollies...the heavy ones will carry that boat's weight just fine and you can configure them with stringers any way you want/need to support her where and at what height you need. Carpet the stringers etc. easy to store later, and multiple uses over time. That's what I use.

Right on the mark John,
That's similar to what I did and then when done with the project I re-cycled the dollies into another project and they are very economical!

Jim,

Do you have any boat stands (jack stands) for sale? Or know anyone in the area that sells them?
