Type of planking
Have a 1956 Continental, 18'. Need to replace section of bottom plank at the stern. What type of wood was used in construction on the bottom?
Re: Type of planking
Outer planks would have been Phillipine mahogany. Sometimes it is hard to find. I don't see why the easier to find African would not work on a bottom repair that is going to be painted.

Re: Type of planking
The closest species I could find to the original (which was old growth) is plantation grown Dark Red Meranti. I despaired using it because the quality is highly variable and sometimes will just crush under the pull of a fastener. As I understand things, the Philippines put a moratorium on harvesting several years ago because supplies were so depleted. That may account for the disappointing quality I have seen. I do have a couple of decent boards that I am hoarding, but not enough to do the entire bottom of our 1937 35' cruiser. I would agree that African is a good substitute for the original. But the original is not gettable anymore. I used 15mm 1088 marine plywood to do the bottom and it seems to have worked out fine. Scarfing is easy and will yield whatever length you desire. I considered African but I would have planed away 50% of the material and spent months doing it. For what it is worth, that is my experience.

We use African on the bottoms and frames here.
