Sea Skiff Cruisers

Post by evansjw44 » Thu Aug 21, 2014 11:32 am

I don't see much mention of Sea Skiff cruisers here. But, CC made some wonderful Sea Skiff cruisers. Lets see some pics of thier work. I'll start with my 1967 35 ft Corinthian.

Here are some gorgeous Sea Skiff cruisers, too! Love them, just can't bring one home or I'd have to sleep on it every night :?

I had a thirty, my father had a thirty also. I wish I could afford a forty. I like my 35 Corinthian bettter than thiry-five.

The 42 was an interesting design with the reverse windshield and cabin glass. Not many were made.

you know Jim, I never knew much about those Corinthians...but seeing your pics it is so much like my Cavalier Seastrake !
Amazing that they are almost identical in appearance...your's being somewhat enlarged....and in a lot better finish and appearance.

Cavalier = smooth plywood bottom & hullsides

Cavalier 'Seastrake' = smooth plywood bottom; lapstrake hullsides

Sea Skiff = lapstrake bottom & hullsides

Sea Skiff 'Corinthian'= lapstrake bottom; carvel-planked hullsides

I think both the Seastrake and Corinthian variants were developed to give the potential buyer even more choices within the CC family: if a buyer wanted one feature but not another, he could begin shopping these two lines of 'half & half' construction...

I've read that the Seastrakes became known for being far stronger and long-lived than their identical-size counterparts offered in the standard smooth-sided Cavalier line.

yes, seastrakes are way stronger.....glued at all seams and thru bolted every 4 inches .....very tough...that is why I have one.

I have a running discussion with the boatyard where I winter store about how to shore my boat. They are full converted to jack stands except for a few hold-outs like me. I insist they shore it on oak beams and fabricate props to hold it upright. They argue that laying the keel in blocks on the pavenement and using jackstands to support the hull is just as good, maybe better. So I ask them, where do you set the stands? They respond -- at the chines, on the bottom. So I ask, where are the chines on a big sea skiff?? They say right at the edge of the bottom. So, Sea Skiffs don't have chines! If you shore it on the turn of the bottom you'll break some ribs. OH Yah? How can a bot have no chines???

Oh to see sea skiff as new.

John,

If you made your way to Detroit I could demonstrate the difference between the flat bottom Cavelier Sea Strake and the Corinthian or Sea Hawk skiff. Sorry, we don't know from crab cakes up here but we're pretty good a walleye.

Jim Evans: you are so right to be careful with those bent ribs/no chine and the haul out crew! Those guys have never heard of such construction...Tupperware is their only frame of reference.....

I am now the owner of the Cry for Help 30' Sea Skiff that Grant posted a picture of in this post. Need a ton of work but it can be saved. Anyone have any advice on replacing the stem?
Thanks
Fred

Fredb, Welcome to the club. Cry For Help, well, it needs a Lot of help. It looks to be in fairly critical condition, but if you have the will she can be saved. I've never replaced a stem in a Skiff so I can't give you a blow by blow how to, but the first thing I'd do is get the paint off her down to bare wood in that area so you can see what you've got and how it's all fastened together. Gona have to take some screws out to get it apart and figure it out from there. Take photos and post them as you go. Good Luck!
