Roamer Owners Unite?

Post by Travlinman1352 » Fri Feb 04, 2011 1:35 pm

I am new to the CCABC. I joined hoping to get advice and inspiration for the restoration of my 1962 Custom Comet. I was somewhat surprised to see so few members that own Roamers, and even more surprised to see no posts by members. I realize this site is geared more to the vintage wood boat owners, but feel that this could be a great source of information for the classic Roamer owner. Please submit photos and information on your classic Roamer and let's make this Enthusiast Group a little more........ENTHUSIASTIC!

Thanks in advance to all members and supporters!!!

Doug P,

I hope you have had your tetanus shot. Oh wait that's right Aluminum don't rust.....I will put a few under the Comet Topic so as to keep it categorized. Thanks for your interest in my project. Likewise how about some shots of yours. Thanks again, AM.

Travlinman;

It was only very recent that we opened the category for Roamers. So it's not that no one is out there but it's a new topic.

There are several beautiful Roamers here in Oklahoma up on Grand Lake. I really like the style but know little about them.

Here are some pics but I don't know the model

Here are photos of a couple of Roamers that are on Pool 26, Upper Mississippi River:

Image
This is "Roamin' Steel" owned by fellow Club member Dave Wann. She's a '62, 44' Roamer Riviera.

Image
This is "Roamin' Steel" with her helm doors closed for cool mornings. The previous shot shows them open which combines the helm with the aft deck.

This is "Reflections", a 1960, 43' Roamer Riviera.

There's a 58' Aluminum Roamer Motor Yacht here and several other smaller ones that we see cruising the river near St. Louis.

Don,
I was unaware the group was so new. As you can see I am a new member myself. That being said, I want to extend my appreciation to the staff at CCABC for making the enthusiast groups....great addition to a great website. I hope this area develops to be a great source of information to the owner, collector and restorer of the Roamer line. Again Thanks to All!

PS. Great pictures....keep'em coming!

Not really new...there has been a small Roamer group out there for years...Just not as visible as the Commander group..and like Commanders once they got started didn't seem to want to affiliate directly with CCABC

First, Welcome to Boat Buzz, a good place to be.

The Roamer Division of Chris-Craft built 2) 38' models in 1964. One was the Offshore, the other was the Commodore. The Commodore model has a Fly Bridge above the aft cabin and a small aft deck. The Offshore model has an enclosed helm, has a sun deck on top of the aft cabin and a larger aft deck.

There's a 1964 Roamer Catalog in the Archive that shows both models. Go to Club Home, log in, then go to Archive. Choose "Browse Entire Archive", then choose "Advertising Literature" and then scroll down to 1964. There you'll find the "1964 Chris-Craft Roamer Yachts Catalog". Pages 6 thru 9 show the 2 models.

To add a photo when posting, click on "Add image to post" just below the text box. The new window gives you a "Brouse" choice. Brouse your image files for the photo you want to post from your computer, then click on "Upload Image". It's easy if you can find the JPG image file in your computer.

Paul, that's a great looking 25' Roamer, very well preserved. First one I've seen.

Allen (Travlinman) is showing the Offshore model 38' Roamer in the photos. Here's the floor plan for it:

Here's the Commodore floor plan that fits the description of rchay's 38' Roamer Commodore.

Dang! She's a beautiful 38' Roamer Commodore. What a great looking cruiser. Your hull number will be between RBD-38-5601 and -5605, only 5 of them built in 1964. There were also 5) built in 1963.

Hi Roamer fans
I just discovered and joined this forum I have a 1964 Roamer Offshore. The Commodore is very rare! I have only once come across another one a few years ago. I have 413 Chryslers in my Offshore. What engines are in your Commodore? What body of water is it on?Image

How do you like the Chrysler's? Were they factory delivered on your hull card?

The question should be "are there any Offshores available anywhere?"

Last fall I ran across an Offshore model in a marina on the Mississippi River. She appeared to have been neglected for years. I drove out there yesterday to see if I could find her and she's gone. There was no one around to question her whereabouts. I'll see what I can dig out later this week.

al, thank you for the info..what you sent, floor plan is my commodore, only diff was sink is where hotplate and other way around..as i mentioned in first pup..she has been repowered with a pair of 236 perkins, goes at 8 or so knots,1500 rpm, burning about 3 gallons an hour..i am setting behind my house on the caloosahatche river just above the first lock,"franklin" in alva fl..fresh water..i am now pulling her every 2 years, was doing 1 when i first got her about 7 ago and replaced some steel every time but last time out was o.k.,so i will pull her next year, cost about 1000.00 to pull, get the bottom done and back in. planning a 2 week trip this spring with friends from northern maine, plan on hitting every tiki bar between here and key west..ah,its so hard..thanks,,r hay

Richard, I've been told that most of the steel bottom deterioration is from inside the bilge. Is this true with yours? Chances are good that you won't have further problems with this now that you have her solid. An ablative bottom paint will wear away as you cruise which exposes new antifouling stuff. If you don't cruise far it can easily last a couple of years.

Careful now, there's a lot of tiki bars along the Keys, don't know that 2 weeks is enough time to test all of them for authenticity.

Hey Richard
We would sure like to see more photos of your Commodore, especially underway. Also, did you know, available on Ebay, a copy of an 1963 advertisement for your Commodore is available. I bought and framed one for my Offshore.

Makes that 38 footer look like a toy boat in a bathtub with a 2-year-old. Wow!

Another Pic of the 35' Roamer Regal. The 42' is under restoration and I will post the progress as I move along. Planning to launch in Spring 2012. 35 will be back in the water in May. I will also share some interior pics.
