Chris-Craft Gathering

Post by Al Benton » Thu Jun 11, 2015 10:04 am

The Club is planning an exciting Gathering of Chris-Craft Boats and Friends.

Our Special Events Chair, Don Ploetner recommended approval of a Chris-Craft Gathering proposal by Ryan Gadow and John Rothert of Virginia, and the Board of Directors approved. Ryan agreed to take the lead and proposed that the event be held the first weekend of October, 2015 at Norview Marina in Deltaville, VA; an area that is filled with nautical history of boat building and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.

All are invited! It is our hope that many cruisers and trailered boats from the region will set these dates on their calendar and join us. The marina will have facilities for all, on land and water. We expect to see members without boats as well. Come and enjoy the camaraderie with members and friends.

The Gathering will include a trip to The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, about a one hour drive from Deltaville. If you’re coming by boat, we’ll get you there. The highlight of this trip will be a visit to The Mariners’ Museum Library at Christopher Newport University to tour the Chris-Craft Archival Collection. Plan ahead and research your boat while we’re there. Further plans may include a tour of the Museum, and/or a Symposium at the facilities. Your input is important here.

The preliminary plans include gathering at the marina on:
Thursday, October 1st – Arrive by boat, car or plane. There will be a Reception with cocktails and finger foods that evening.
Friday, October 2nd – A day at The Mariners’ Museum and dinner at a select seafood restaurant.
Saturday, October 3rd – Plans will include activities at the marina and around Deltaville followed by drinks and a cook-out.
Sunday, October 4th – Depart after one last gathering.

As mentioned, these plans are very preliminary and are flexible. Please reserve the dates and let us know that you are interested in attending. Make suggestions that may make the event more interesting to you.

Exact plans await your input. Registration and fees will be determined and posted. This is an Official Club Sponsored Event, so plan now to take part in this exciting Chris-Craft Gathering.

I would love to be there, but I think that is the same weekend as Operation Pumpkin, a festival where I run a workshop for about 1000 kids building toolboxes and baskets.

Jim,

There's an airport in Newport News and another in Norfolk to the south. Richmond may be served by more airlines and is about 1-1/2 hours away from Newport News by rental car. About the same distance from Richmond to Deltaville, but a slower drive.

There are several Bed N Breakfasts and a few motels in the Deltaville area. In Newport News there's the Best Western that we all stayed at in Dec 2011. It was reasonable and comfortable. There may be others to consider that may be nearer to the museum, for those who elect to stay in town rather than in the Deltaville area. Please plan your itinerary to include some time both locations though.

We will close in on details for flights, accommodations and a more detailed schedule soon.

Our plan would be to meet up with you folks at the Museum and spend the next day in Deltaville. See you there!

After much thought...We really want this to be a big event, and with that comes lots of planning. We are going to scrap the date for this fall, and start planning for either next spring or next fall (2016). What's everyone's thoughts on the time of year to have the event so we have maximum turn out?

I would vote for Fall, planning on Tavares in the spring and probably would run into challenges getting to both. :?

Understand the desire for better planning, but would suggest just doing it as a first event and not getting too caught up in the details.

actually this is the SECOND event....we had one that I put together a couple of years back.....I agree with Ryan that next year would be best and with Troy that it would be best held in that fall....the key is the Mariners Museum part......
