Last Gar Wood ever for sale on E-Bay?

Post by Oberon01 » Fri Oct 02, 2009 4:18 pm

On Matt Smith's blog Woodyboater.com, today there is a link to an interesting E-Bay auction. it is for a 1947 Gar Wood 18'6" Utility. The seller purports it to be the highest serial (#8028), last Gar Wood built and shipped, and states this this fact has been authenticated by Tony Mollica.

If this is correct, it would be a very worthwhile boat to restore. It does not look too bad, is mostly complete, and the seller does not seem out of whack on his price. Usually interesting pieces like this have highly elevated asking prices.

Let's hope a real purist buys it and restores it to factory-correct. Perhaps it should be in a museum somewhere.

The boat on E-Bay is not the last Gar Wood built or shipped. Please see his response to my question below

"Hull #8028 was not the highest number for this model Gar Wood. Hull #8033 built in Marysville, another 18'-6" Gar Wood utility was shipped on 4/4/47 and is registered with the Gar Wood Society. There were probably 10 or 15 18'-6" Utilities shipped after this one from the Newport News plant. The highest hull number for the 18'-6" utility was #10677 from Newport News.

So hull #8028 was not the last one built nor the last one shipped. It's close to the end, but it's not the last one as claimed in the ad."

Tony

Too bad -would have been an interesting story.
