Chris Craft Fiberglass Cutlass

Post by farupp » Tue Aug 07, 2007 9:38 am

I am interested in finding a 22-foot fiberglass Chris Craft Cutlass or Cutlass Dory, as they are sometimes called, with a cuddy cabin. A picture of the fiberglass boat is on page 652 of Jerry Conrad’s book, Chris Craft, The Essential Guide. Jerry’s book covers Chris Craft boats built through 1977.

According to the book, this model was made in 1964 to 1968 in plywood lapstrake (page 458) and in fiberglass in 1969 and 1970. However, I have seen 1978 models advertised. The newer model has a larger cabin area with small windows. I have not seen any 1969 or 1970 fiberglass boats advertised.

Was there a gap in production of this model from 1971 through 1977? If there was, does anyone know why production was started again in 1978? Does anyone have experience with the 1978 or later models in areas such as their reliability, hull design and strength, weaknesses, features, etc.?

Thanks.

Chris Craft built the 22' Dory from 1964 until 1977. They were built of lapstraked plywood in Cadillac, MI until 1968, then with fiberglass hulls at their Corsair Division until 1977 (don't know if that run was continuous). If there's a 1978 model out there it's probably not built by CC.

After suffering huge losses in the mid 70's the Boat Division went through major realignment and consolidation of facilities to recover. Several models including the Dory were dropped in an effort to streamline their operation and recover financially. It almost worked.

Don't know who may have made the '78 model but know that Pacific Marine Manufacturing is making new boats using the very same hull design.

Thanks, Al. Here is a picture of a 1978 model that was advertised last year. There have been a couple of others, too. Definitely says Chris Craft on the cabin side but it has a larger cabin design than shown in Jerry Conrad's book.

Cutlass Dory

That looks exactly like the boat I bought this Spring in Hampton Bays, NY. Does anyone have information on these? I want to do some restoration work this winter. Thanks.

Bill I have several pictures of different fiberglass Cutlass' that I could email you. Who did you buy your Cutlass from? I found several on Long Island when I was looking. Send me a private message with what you are looking for.
