XK 8 Meter

Post by dave tuttle » Fri Jan 27, 2017 10:31 pm

I have admired the Chris Craft 8 Meter boat for quire awhile and recently purchased what I believed to be an original example of a 1975 model. The Chris Craft Essential Guide by Jerry Conrad from the Mariners Museum states that 38 of these off shore race type boats were produced 1975 and 1976 by Chris Craft and the Hull number series are between ORAZ-27-001 to ORAZ-27 038. The book states the Hull side color was Yellow and Upholstery color was White and Yellow. I had inspected several what appeared to be original examples of the 8 Meter and all had Red Hull sides with White and Orange Upholstery. I am further confused as my SN # is CCFAV0290575, not an ORAZ sequence number. Would anyone have insight and/or clarification. Thanks in advance for your help. Dave Tuttle

The CCFA number is the 12 digit number the Coast Guard started requiring all manufacturers to use starting in 1972. The last 4 digits are the month and year the boat was built. The first 2 digits are the boat manufacturer.

Chris Craft still used their old hull numbering system for internal tracking of the boats while they were being built. The ORAZ number is usually under resin on the inside of the transom.

Thanks Jim. Interesting and much appreciated. I will look on the inside of my transom in hopes of locating the ORAZ number.
