Battery Placement
Our batteries are in the back under the hatch below the rear seat on a raised platform. Here's a photo:

Do you have the original lovely orange and white upholstery? We're just changing ours to white with some blue accent stripes.

I also have a 1973 23 Lancer which is going through a "complete" restoration and repowering. I have yet to find the battery cables, so you know about where I am on this. The boat came with no motor or transmission. Any weight aft would certainly not pound as much as weight forward, and I would suggest if you do go with a forward location be sure you get everything well above the water line in the bilge and make sure the supports will sustain what a 23 Lancer hull is capable of in the chop. The weight of a battery or two will put a wood structure to test!
