Stringer construction

I will be replacing the motor in my 1979 23' Lancer soon. I understand the stringers are fiberglass with NO wood core. What are the engine mounts bolted to? Is the fiberglass that thick a lag bolt will get a good bite in it? Robert Fierro (posts on this forum) has a 1969 Lancer with some sort of metal under the fiberglass.

I've seen a few early 70s Lancers, including my 23' 1972 I/B Lancer. They've all had wooden cores. Is yours an I/B?

As far as I know the only wood in the stringers are where the engine is supported so something like 2' of wood moulded into the stringers each side of the engine and thats it! No other wood in any stringers in the hull. Have checked this on my first 19' Lancer and then on my present 23' both got their hulls reinforced during renovation so quite thorougly checked.

Thanks. I will fill the old mounting holes with epoxy. For the new mounting holes, I am thinking of drilling, running the lag bolt in to open it, removing the lag bolt, filling the hole with epoxy or Git-Rot, and redrilling prior to final installation of the lag bolts. Any opinions?

My 1969 17'Cavalier Ski Boat has a couple of feet of wood only where the engine mounts. The advice I got from the Antique Boat Shop here in Cincinnati was to take a pick and dig around in the lag bolt holes to check for soft or rotten wood. If the wood is in good shape and still solid and dry, you may not need to do much filling on the holes.

Poking around the old holes is the first thing I will do once the old motor is removed.

The wood in our boat was/is in great shape, I have not pulled the engine, but did poke around at holes and found them to be solid. When I reinserted the bolts, they tightened up like new.

How close to exactly the same are the motor mount holes on the block from motor to motor (350 GM block) over the last 30 years? Are they all exactly the same distance from the rear face of the block, and width-wise the same distance apart?
