Authentic Chris-Craft Merchandise

Post by Bill Basler » Sat Jun 21, 2008 10:36 am

The Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club has been working on a few items that we will soon have for sale online. We are working with key suppliers in manufacturing items that may be of interest to the Chris-Craft Antique Boat enthusiast.

Chris-Craft Pre WW-II Burgee
One glance on eBay and you will see that what the world does not need is another Chris-Craft Burgee. Closer inspection will reveal that the Pre WW-II burgees that are currently available are incorrect in a number of ways. First, they are nylon. Second, they are the wrong proportion and shape. Third, they have machine-embroidered letterforms. A combination of these things, gives the burgees the wrong look.

We have just received a small shipment of our new burgees. We have partnered with a manufacturer who agreed to make these to our exact specifications. Countless hours were spent sourcing the correct cotton materials. No nylon in these! An original 1938 burgee was purchased and sent to the manufacturer to dissect and copy. Our burgees have the correct thread color, the correct stitching pattern, and the correct, hand-cut, appliqued letterforms. Most importantly, they are the right color, and the right shape, complete with the swallowtail end.

You'll note that our burgees also have a "Johnson Tent & Awning Company, Detroit, Mich" label attached to the reinforced edge–just as the original pre WW-II burgees had. We have received special permission from the Jim Johnson Company (prior the Johnson Tent & Awning Company) to use this label for authenticity. We appreciate the willingness of Dick Dancy with the Jim Johnson Company to work with us on this.

The burgees are available in the two sizes used on pre WW-II runabouts and small cruisers. Small, 9" x 18" (for runabouts up to 20-foot) and Large, 12" x 22" (for boats 21-foot and larger).

The pricing for the Small burgee is $85.00 including shipping
The Large Burgees are $100.00 including shipping.

Please PM me, or Email me if you are interested. I am in the Club Directory at http://www.chris-craft.org/directory

Hull ID Marking Stamps
A number of Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club members have worked together to replicate the stamps that were used to apply pre war hull numbers (0 through 9) to various components inside a pre war Chris-Craft hull. These are likely the same stamps that were used on Gar Woods as well. They create a stamped letterform that is approximately .5-inch high. A set include numerals 0 through 9. The stamp font has been patterned after pre war Chris-Craft numeral samples, collected from original hulls. To our knowledge this has been the only attempt made to recreate these stamps using the correct fonts. It looks as though we have enough interest to produce these stamp sets at $275.00 per set. This does not include shipping. Shipping will be extra depending on your location. We do not have any photos of the completed stamp sets yet, as they are still in production. We will follow up with photos to interested parties as soon as we have a prototype to photograph. we are in production of these stamps now. It is possible that if there is enough interest in these, the price could fall, but for now, these are $275.00 per set. Special thanks go out to member Sam Wilson for making this happen. Sam was the one who spearheaded this, and generated the artwork for the stamps, and coordinated this with the vendor.

Fantastic new burgee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by THE RAZZ » Sat Jun 21, 2008 3:10 pm

Bill,
Razzmatazz now sports the newly manufactured orginal and correct burgee. Thank you.

Everyone who contributed to this important reproduction of the 1938 burgee deserves huge praise.

It looks GREAT! Its quiet different for the burgee we bought in 2004; the attention to details- type and quality of material, stiching, label and color- make it a compelling "must have."

How cool to now tie up at a show where all can easily note this is a perfect replica of the pre War burgee orginal. Can it get any better. Not.

All us history geeks lucked out here. Thanks.
The Razz

Matt, I got you beat, I bought two! Hope they get here before I head to Gravenhurst for the Muskoka Show on July 5. Having the correct burgee will make my showing off of the boat that much sweeter!

Remember, they're accurate, all cotton replicas and are guaranteed to wear and fade just as fast as the original ones.

But, boy they sure look good.

Matt, I can recommend a doctor that can help with the man boobs! BTW, if you want to show them off, I think there is a website where you can post pics. As a FYI, I am not hoarding. When you buy one kid something, you have to remember the other one as well. My boats are not generally in the same place at the same time and I would forget my head, let alone remember to carry one burgee from boat to boat. And if the are in the same place, what good is one burgee for two boats?

Wooohhooooo, got my burgee.. Dang. It makes a difference.. Really... All the neighbors are talking. I zoom buy in 15 coats of varnish, flathead roaring, and I swear they are commenting on the extra 2 inches on the burgee. "Dang Betty Lou, you see that flag on that thing? Its just the right length"

I'd like to have a Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club dash plaque to go on the transom, or on the hull side(s). Is there one, or perhaps one in the making? If not, wouldn't it be nice to have one?

We had them when the club first formed....but members would join for a year and display the sticker forever...but then The Brass Bell was only 4 to six pages and we didn't have Boat Buzz then...

Problem was designing a sticker with an effective expiration date...

Several thoughts:

ACBS offers club merchandise; does anyone know their marketing person well enough to get an idea what sells, what doesn't and what is cost effective?

Car stickers: we could put a year on them. i.e. CCABC Member 2009. Change the date each year. But, then we would have to print new ones each year.

Or, don't include a date. Even if a member does not rejoin, but leaves the sticker on their vehicle, it's free advertising, and we could print alot more at a much lower per piece cost. Use ink on the sticker that fades in the sun after 367 days?!

Put the web site address on the sticker. Then, interested individuals can go to the web site to find out more about CCABC.

I believe it will be expensive to offer a variety of club merchandise but it is a nice idea. We may lose money on it for a while. And, we'll need to have merchandise manager. Maybe it could be added to Bill's title!

Wilson,
Got it. But, "in an out" member probably display/advertises CCABC continously. Not a bad thing.

Color coded plaques (with years). It will become a collectible for us members.
I created a similiar thing for the Royal Swedish Opera – your personal key to the opera house, new color/style every year.

Any chance The Razz could get a key to the Royal Swedish Opera house?

Razz's skipper who reveres opera houses, played tuba with a symphony, ballet, and Civic Light Opera Orchestra, 1962-1982.

There's nothing like the harmony of wood boats, unless is a symphony orchestra live in the opera house playing Verdi"s Requiem. Yes. :)

Authentic Chris-Craft Merchandise

Many of us trade cars every 3 to 10 years so the car bumper sticker sounds like a good idea. Maybe it would read "My Other Boat is a " " (Insert Chris Craft, Dee Wite, Garwood, Dodge, Cadillac, etc.)

Back to the burgee. Read the story in the fall Brass Bell and bought one today. Though my project is years away from completion, it will look good on my office wall......

Now, how about a correct pre-war flag?

Bjorn, your order was received and will ship Monday. Thank you.

Actually, we have had a few requests for ensigns, and we may be pursuing that in the near future. There have also been quite a number of requests for Gar Wood burgees.

Anyone have good credible examples of pre war ensigns or Gar Wood burgees?

E gads! It looks even more "charming" than the original Chris-Craft burgees. Jim, I may want to borrow that from you, or at least have you lay it down in a good photo copier and take a copy of it at 100% size. Let's see if there's any other who come forward.

Bill I can’t agree with you on that one, I am a little fond of the Chris Craft. I will tell you that someone should make repos of the Gar Wood because I need one. Cool stuff Jim!

Mike, in this case my "charming" comment was sarcastic. I should have really said, "crude as hell!" The Gar Wood burgees look as thought they could have been made by the same supplier. Similar materials and construction at least. The letterforms are as crudely cut out as they could possibly be!

OK.Maybe I am the only one! But the whacked type is very cool. If its real, it adds to the story of hand made construction. Think rat rod. That type is funky sometimes..
