Fall Brass Bell

Post by Brian Robinson » Mon Dec 17, 2007 9:34 pm

I was really pleased with how the Fall 2007 Brass Bell turned out – mine arrived today. I did want to clarify a couple things about my latest ‘Purest’ article “The 1937-1939 Green Boot Tops”. I am probably too anal about these things, but I noticed a difference in the green color between the boats on page 37 and page 40, a difference that is true to life – one that I did not think would show up as clearly as it did – Basler’s print quality is too good! The boat on page 37 is Al Schinnerer’s 1940 27’ Racing Runabout, which he altered the green slightly to better match his green interior (remember, the 1940 23’ and 27’ boats retained the green boot tops and added green deck seams and green upholstery). The boat on page 40 is Dave Lyon’s 1939 19’ Custom – this is a more accurate representation of the Kirby’s “Robinson Apple Green” paint color.

I also attached the 1939 colorized catalog ‘photo’ I was referring too in the article.

Thanks for all the calls I have received today about the article, many of the folks who called had noticed this green detail when they were disassembling their own boats.

It's amazing how the runabouts look with the different caulking and boot top colors. I've never seen a boat with green accents yet, but I saw a boat at Bruce Bronson's shop some time back with the orange caulking stripes and boot top stripe. It was gorgeous!

Ahhh, it seems like all the fun colors were before my 41. Dang. The green is amazing. I also love the orange deck seams. Does anyone know of any fun stuff in 41.
