Oops...Spammers...Arrghh

Post by Bill Basler » Mon Sep 18, 2006 3:09 pm

I goofed when I set up the new categories for Fiberglass. I inadvertently left the settings on the forum topics set to "public", meaning any one can come in and make posts. I discovered it just moments ago and kicked off one "alleged member". I have banned him from Boat Buzz and deleted the topic that he posted.

I guess this illustrates why we have this forum set up the way it is. In a nutshell, you can trust that everyone that is involved here on Boat Buzz is a dues paying member of the Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club, except for a certain few who were let in under special circumstances.

Spammers operate using perl scripts (as an example), looking for bulletin board systems (such as Boat Buzz) that they can exploit. The perl scripts do nothing other than crawl the web 24/7 looking for a hole to come in to. In our case it took less than 48 hours for the first to come in and start pitching his wares.

Evil, Evil, Evil.

I think we have everything locked down once again.

Al, I am going to check on that this morning. I don't know right off hand.
