Trailer options

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

Trailer options

Post by storm34 » Mon Oct 18, 2010 7:37 pm

Looking at trailers for our 55 Continental project which is currently sitting on a cradle in our shop. We used to use our Correct Craft #3 trailer but sold that boat and have a newer model trailer which will not work.

Anyone have a preference to trailer makers and models in the midwest?

There is a boat trailer manufacturer right there in Iowa: Midwest Industries in Ida Grove, maker of Shoreland'r trailers.

Trailmaster did mine. It was handled by the restorer who is also a Trailamster dealer. I had them put wheels on the prop cage:

Thanks for the replies! Ken, thats a great looking rig! I see you wen't with the tube trailer. Would you mind explaining the benefits over a channel trailer? My worry would be rust and weak spots at the welds over time.

I've looked into Shorelander trailers but I see a lot of them in our area and they seem to be pretty bare bones and not geared toward inboards. I may be wrong, but they seem to be a pretty cheap trailer and we're looking for something that will carry our investment nicely.

You might check out Midwest Industries again and ask if the brothers still own Eagle Trailers, if they do they make very good custom trailers. Another good thing about this partnership is they deliver right across our HAWKEYE state and delivery is much easier. You might also check with Trailmaster in Ohio, they make inboard trailers as well. I have bought trailers from both company's and they are excellent trailers. Hope this helps,Don J

Well I just had a senior moment in my last post. I meant LOADMASTER Trailers in Ohio not Trailmaster. The only thing about getting my age is that now I can hide my own Easter Eggs. Don J

I would highly recommend a trailer manufacturer in Ohio by the name of C-Hawk. They specialize in custom trailers for antique boats and they are very reasonably priced. Their Wed Site is www.c-hawktrailers.com. I bought one of their trailers for my newly restored CC runabout and I could not be more satisfied. Ask for Dave, 419-564-7181

I buddy of mine had Shoreland'r custom modify a stock trailer for his Chris-Craft U-22. 5 years or so of use and he's very happy with it.

I used a company called JQ-Tex in Mishawauka, ind who did a GREAT job for my 1930 22' triple. They do both channel or tube, all bunks are adjustable, They did a swing away tongue for me. I got the options of disc brakes and torsion bar suspention ( rather than leaf springs. I pulls straight as an arrow. No problems, been very happy with the trailer. Since 2005 I've probably pulled the boat + or -- 40,000 miles

I second the JQ Tex (AKA Trailmaster & Vanguard) recommendation. They'll make whatever you want. They also stand behind their work. I had an issue with a sticky break caliper and they fixed it on the spot, free of charge.

You should bring your boat directly to the shop in Mishawaka for a fixed bunk, custom fit.
