It sounds like you may need to file the screw head a little more to make it slide in and out a bit easier. On the wood end I would fill all of the holes and reassemble the metal sleeve and put the screw back in.

Regarding the screw that locks the pole in, I knew well that the wood screw wouldn't last, so I used a machine screw whose threads would be tight in the hole, ran a tap through the hole matching the threads on the screw. I then turned the outside diameter of the screw down and screwed it in the hole. I then soldered it in place and cut the portion sticking out on the inside of the tube flush. Works perfectly and won't come loose.
