5gallon pail of 5200

So, I noticed that Jamestown Distributors offers a 5 gallon pail of 5200 for $680. Which, according to my volume calculations, 5gal=65tubes=5.5cases=$990ish, so the discount is quite significant. I know I'll be using at least that much when I do the 5200 bottom. And I know I'll have to keep a plastic bag or something like that in the pail pressed down on whatever remains in the bucket to minimize air contact. I was just wondering if any of you have used the pail version and had any bad feedback or advise against it?? It seems to me that it would also be much easier to apply out of the pail with a trowel or something considering the amount of surface area that must be covered when doing the bottom. Any input/opinions are much appreciated

I have not tried this but Don Danenberg has and it was not positive. I would think it would be nearly impossible to keep what is left in the pail from hardening.

Yes, I did try this ONCE! This was 1998(?) when tubes were $6.05 (20-cases) and the pails were $270?
I had three bottoms ready to go before I opened anything. Framework all done and sealed, inner bottoms installed and sealed, planks steam bent and dry-fit with locator screws. I had a crew of 3. What didn't get used on a day was covered with pressed plastic and put in the shop fridge.
I lost the bottom 1/4 of the first two pails and 2/3 of the final pail. I had to purchase tubes to finish that last boat.
I never tried that again!

If you can arrange a "bottom party" with a half-dozen friends, who are all trained in what their jobs are so that you can get all installed and fastened in ONE DAY....., It might work, good luck.

Be careful, Jamestown is known for selling outdated product.
Also, the pail method is unbelievably messy.

Great to know. I'll stick to the tubes. Thanks!

Several tool manufacturers sell battery powered and pneumatic caulking guns now which speed up the dispensing process.

If you are lucky you may find one that matches your current battery stock.

We just get it a bit warm and don't use a tip and you can empty a tube real quick.

Mike's got it, exactly what I do.
I place a dozen tubes in the furnace outflow, or in the past, put a dozen tubes in the shop sink full of HOT water for an hour or two.
I use pneumatic guns and without a tip can empty a tube in 3-seconds.
Warm and liquid, its also much easier to trowel and likely gets a better bond.
