Good advice Denny, but why white lines on a '29?

Re: Battery Cable Question

Pete, Those look like original cables. Note the flag ends on BOTH ends. A lot of guys miss this on reproduction cables. They are 1/0 size (cloth covered). Today's 1/0 size have a slightly larger OD because the insulation is thicker. I get my cables from Y 'n Z's here in southern California. Ask for ...

That's great Mike.

It makes a triple axle under the 25' Gar seem wimpy.

Looks like you have a pretty complete seat back in great shape. You should send a swatch to Paul Cundiff, he might be able to help.

Photo 3 is a 1940 28' Gar Wood MAGGIE B owned by Bill Gage on Geneva Lake. #4 is a 1929 or 1930 26' Hackercraft I can't pin down. #7-13 is really interesting. I don't know where this boat wound up but would like to. It is a 1929 or 1930 33' Gar Wood. #19 is a 1932 25' Gar Wood JANE owned by Jud Laws...

Re: Trailer Axles, Should I Be Seeing Double?

In the recent Brass Bell trailer article couple things stood out to me: A ratchet strap OVER the transom of any wood boat is a terrible idea. Not only is this putting loads on the structure of the boat it is not intended for (deck and covering boards…eek), big heavy nylon straps, padded or not, cran...

Re: 1956 Capri "Carpenter Special Flame"

Carpenter Special Flame a.k.a. Flame Straw was used on a lot of 1956 Chris-Craft's. About 99% of that model year's 19' and 21' Capri's, and Continental's were done in that material. "Carpenter" may have been referring to the pattern, which used stitched square seat backs with white Tolex welting and...

Re: Walnut stain

Walnut stain for covering boards etc. was still used on a few models postwar. My late-'54 Racer was one of the very last to use it for covering boards.

Remember, it was always walnut over the red stain, not over bare wood. Totally different look.

Re: Correct deck vents for 1940 17' Deluxe?

Not sure what you mean by "top vented tank" but your tank should vent through the cap only, and not through the side of the boat like 71769 and newer. Should have only two vents with 2.5" holes in the deck.

Re: Hull card

A handful had red or blue.. or pink? It would have had to be special ordered that way. There were no "optional" upholstery colors. The gold, white, black combo is the right look for a stock '55 Capri, most people love it. It's your boat, you can do what you want, but what is on the hull card is the ...

Victor, Your '55 would have had gold, white, and black (alligator) Tolex. The seat backs had all three colors, with the white in a individual stitched-square pattern. Not the easiest interior to reproduce. I have a nice original interior out of a '55 19' Capri you are welcome to borrow when I am thr...

Several Brass Bell advertisers, including Jim Staib @ Fine Wood Boats have wire sets too.

No boots on Hercules distributers. Scripps, Kermath, Chrysler and some others did use rubber boots.

Restoration Supply is where I buy a lot of stuff. They are just 30 miles down the road from me. The original 7mm black ignition wire was a rubber coated cloth. Lately I have been using the #ELE186 (Packard 440 wire), it is dull black and shows a weave under the surface like the original, just rememb...

Pete, The white pyramid is held down by gravity only. Usually there are 3-5 screws and finish washers along the top edge in the front. A couple notes to do it right: Single slit for the shifter (not a cut oval). The front cockpit uses one piece of 36" - measure from the top of the toe board to the h...

I have a couple quarts left of prewar Chrysler green in acrylic enamel. You can PM mw or email [email protected]

As far as I can tell, Chrysler did not start painting the script red until 1936.

Please post the catalog pages stating that, or email them to me. It certainly does not agree with my catalogs? I have only seen "Bright green Spanish Leather" mentioned as an option on the 1932-only 18'-only split. Thanks!

Green leather in a Gar Wood... sacrilege! If you want the proper heavy grain burgundy-black try Keleen Leather in Illinois or Rod Souza in California.

Re: Special order ! R&P sz10 Long chrome screws

Steve,

I will buy 50 if the price is around a buck a screw. The seat back screws I am used to seeing in the runabouts are #10x3.5" like you say, but are flat head, unplated, like in a Racing Runabout for example.

Thanks for doing this.

Re: Fender cleats/cover tie downs

I think they detract from the boat - who wants to drill holes in your beautiful wood??

Use snaps. Replace screws in your stem band, transom bands, rub rail etc with snaps to secure the cover. Or sand bags?
