Re: Engine tag missing
I saw your post and thought it was timely in the sense that I just got my engine from VanNess and it does not have the serial number tag on the manifold. I know reproductions are available and I'll be ordering one soon, but the questions is, for folks with the same dilemma, what serial number do you...

Re: Decks on 1955 17' Sportsman
Does anyone have pictures of their completed floor showing linoleum and hatch trim? So far all I've been able to see are decks with the black ribbed rubber w/out trim. And I'd love to see the port side of an engine box housing the KLC carb. I'm unable to find the gray Royelle so I'm substituting For...

Hi Josh, I had the same Cavalier but with the 4cyl 60hp that I did a total resto on. I loved that boat and the beauty was,---no leaks! I always wanted to see how the same boat with the K would perform and I'll bet yours will scream! Your b...

Re: Floor on 1955 17' Sportsman
Hmm, I thought I posted a reply but it doesn't appear!~ Anyway, thanks for the reply Pete. My hull card says the boat originally had red flame upholstery and gray royelle flooring. The previous owner had new green upholstery installed and I'm going to stay with it. It should look nice with the royel...

Re: 1956 Capri Deck Seam Caulk Removal
I just finished removing the deck caulk from my 1955 Sportsman. I learned a bunch of new cuss words doing that! Especially when the dental tool I was using would pop out of the groove and leave a scratch on the deck. There is a product called Un-Hesive that I bought that worked remarkably well in lo...

Making nice progress on the boat however I'm still dealing with incorrect previous work. The floor boards are not original. I've viewed Jim Godlewski's photos and some pictures Pete DeVito previously posted. Both are different, however I think Pete's are origin...

Yes, I know this is not the typical forum for Mercruiser, but I do know most of us fooling with these boats also have experience in other propulsion systems, so----- Who is a good source for parts/repair/advice on Mercruiser drives? I met a fellow at the Tavares Boat Show who lives in my town. He's ...

Thanks for the information. I like the original style better and have returned the boat to the original style decking.

Re: Awlwood
I think that is what the previous owner of my '55 17' Sportsman used on the decks. Nothing will touch it except heat, and if you have to strip a boat with a heat gun, it is not the easiest thing in the world. I'd vote "no" on using it..

Re: My First Wood Chris Craft (1958 15' Cavalier)(K Engine)
Correct would be varnished sides with the white band at the top. I previously had a picture of mine underway near the top of these posts but the spray prevents the entire side of the boat from being shown.

Maintaining moisture content when planking
I live in Florida and am restoring a 1955 Sportsman. The decks were done previously and incorrectly so I'm replacing them. Some days we have very low humidity in the Spring followed by damp days, then dry again. It drives me nuts trying to anticipate a day when the humidity is low so I can fasten th...

Location of gas tank overflow outlet
Working on my 1955 17' Sportsman....At the Tavares show there were 2 Sportsman's in attendance, one was a 1955. Both had their gas overflow outlet on the stern. Mine is on the starboard side and the planks are original (I think). So where is the correct location? Did Chris Craft make changes during ...

Hey Mark, Sorry this is so late of a response but I only get on here once in a while,--and it just so happens I returned from Tavares and attended Dave Van Ness's lecture there. Re: 5200 for seam cracks
If the heads of the screws are coming off and the shanks are (seem to be) sound, there is a tool to remove broken screws. Fuller makes "Unscrewums" and I've used them with great success. They look like roll pins that have teeth cut into the ends. You run them counter clockwise over the top of the sc...

Re: flooring correct type covering for 1956 sportsman
Probably the best thing to do is order the build sheet from Mariner's Museum in Newport News V.A for the specifics. I have a 1955 model and it came with grey royelle linoleum. It also had the red naugahyde. Somewhere later they went to the black ribbed flooring

Re: flooring correct type for custom sportsman 1956
Royelle was the correct color/pattern and is listed on my hull card for my '55 Sportsman. I paid a visit to Southern Crown Supply in Georgia (Google their info) and viewed all the sample patterns Jeanne had. I'm going with # 3032 Mist Gray from Forbo Flooring. The pattern is tighter than the Royelle...

Grey Royelle Linoleum
I've seen earlier posts for Raybelle linoleum or perhaps it is Rayelle?? Anyway, the build sheet for my 1955 17' Sportsman indicates " Grey Royelle Linoleum installed on floor". Those letters "Royelle" on the build sheet are very distinct. So my question is where might I find the matching product? I...

Re: Decks on 1955 17' Sportsman
Thanks Pete---that confirms my suspicions! My hull # is CC-17-979 but it is incorrect in the ACSB directory. I had the green bilge paint duplicated as best as possible using pieces inside the boat that had some spilled on them that was not affected by bilge water. I had George Kirby Paint Co. make i...

Decks on 1955 17' Sportsman
My 1955 17' Sportsman has what I think is incorrect decking on the stern area. The bow of course has the striped decks but the rear deck is striped also with the planks running fore and aft, and those planks overlap the top transom board. This boat had new decks installed a number of years before I ...

Decals and finish over them
I've got the hull stained. Many "Thanks" to Maritimeclassics for recommending the Jel stain. It is wonderful. Now to the question. The boat is a 1955 17' Sportsman. Where can I get the correct "Chris Craft" hull side decals? I've seen the correct style and they are silver. When I got my boat the dec...

Re: Staining Technique
Charles, Oh, I know that, but the goal was to try to blend as best as possible. It is more of a grain difference than color at this point. You mentioned in an earlier post that bleaching will remove the remaining filler stain,---is that correct? So far it has been a pain trying to get it all off. St...

Re: Staining Technique
It looks like you have all new planking??--If so, that does ease the application. In my case the planks have been bleached 4 times and neutralized. Re: Staining Technique

Re: Staining Technique
Thanks for that information. I've done 2 boats with filler stain and achieved beautiful results, but both were small and were plywood.
