evolution of gar wood design

I guess perhaps discussing design isnt exactly the hottest topic on the buzz, but it is of interest at least to me. Again your insights provide a lot of food for thought. Particularly the stylistic tricks to enhance the appearance of the boats. Perhaps the club could have a contest to find out what ...

gar wood

Thanks, bill, there is a lot to digest here. I am impressed with your level of knowledge beyond just cc. Based on the conrad book, it seems that chris craft first went to the flush deck starting in 1932, and then expanding to other models. To me, this is the classic 30's style, with the dark king pl...

evolution of gar wood design

Some of you may have seen the series of pictures in the current issue of classic boating about the evolution of chris craft design during the 30's from raised deck thru to the torpedo style. I am wondering if gar wood went thru any similar design evolution? Also who did the design work for gar wood?

Best wishes to you!. According to jerry conrad's book, chris-craft the essential guide, the 42 corsair was made for three model years, 1956-1958. Series Cr-42-601--612, was the 1957 model. (11 made in 56, 4 in 58, for a total model production of 27.) Chris model years were like car models, so it is ...

This is a great line that I just stumbled into. It raises the question in my mind why we dont have a separate section on "design" or aesthetics. There are sections for engines, electrical, wood, etc. but I was surprised to discover that there was not a section specifically devoted to design matters....

1942 special runabout

I might add that the hull sequence you referenced was for the deluxe runabout series. But i suspect the change was made around that time for all runabouts as a result of new coast guard ventilation requirements. since the 1942 special runabout would presumably have had production start around july o...

pre-war life jackets

Thanks for the clarification. Yes I would be interested. Given the limited storage in my boat, having them coast guard approved, if that is feasible, would allow them to serve two purposes.

bill, this is a very nice jacket. However, I still would be interested in knowing how it relates stylistically to some known pre-war jackets.

Well, I guess my preference would be to find an example of a common pre-war life jacket, and then use that as a model, but with modern materials, etc. but maintaining the "look" of a vintage jacket.

I can second the comment on Ryan trailers. They are really superior to anything else i have seen out there and they can be completely customized to suit your needs and desires, such as custom colors, etc.

yes, I guess the civilian ones may have been different. There is a merchant marine life jacket photo in the website for the national world war 11 museum; also I think the ones issued to the navy and the air force seemed to have an inflatable chamber on either side of the front and hence I think thes...

funny coincidence, isnt it, Bill? they look nice but my recollection is that the front part consists of 2 more cylindrically filled pieces, one on each side, rather than a series of smaller tubes in a vest arrangement. I will try to see if i can find a picture of someone in the navy during the war t...

Actually, earlier than that. my 38 deluxe runabout has them. they are wedge shaped to make the step pad flat against a sloping edge of the deck.

As far as the coast guard numbers that were issued prior to the states issuing numbers, (which is different from having a "documented vessel", I checked in the late 80's here with the seattle coast guard and they had thrown out all the records for them in this district, at least. You could check you...

If you want a boat that is historically correct, then you need to go for the 6 volt. It is not that much different in performance. However, if that is not an issue for you, the 12 volt will give you a little more oomph.
