Re: Engine Oil - What Do We Use
I found a chart that may be helpful. The entire article is pretty informative, but you can scroll all the way down for a viscosity vs temp chart for various oils including 20w 50. At 120f (50c) and above, the differences start to shrink. http://www.kewengineering.co.uk/Auto_oils/oil_viscosity_explai...

Re: Engine Oil - What Do We Use
I disagree completely. 20w does not mean a viscosity of 20 at 0c, it means viscosity that is similar to straight 20 at the testing temp. The actual viscosity at freezing is quite high, around 1000-1100. As the temp goes up, the viscosity drops. Dramatically at first, then leveling out. It crosses th...

Same reason as Mr. Hoffman, that is what the builder told me to use. 20w-50 plus zinc if needed.tkhersom wrote:Why such a high viscosity?mfine wrote:I use 20-50 in my V8's as well.

Re: Jet Drive Jacuzzi brand and modifications
I am of little help. The Jets I know are the 1950's and early 60's Buehler and Hamilton axial pumps. The one thing I can tell you is when I rode in Pumpkin a couple years ago, it was hitting tops speeds in the low to mid 50's with two people, but based on the engine RPM, they still had not gotten it...

Re: Fuel line size 3/8" to 5/16" for electric fuel pump
For what it costs, I would get a spool of larger line. I tested 1/4" ID line with a 5 psi pump and it was able to flow around 20 GPH which would be OK for an engine under 200 hp, but you are likely looking at a max draw in the 30-35+ GPH range for a 300 hp big block. Even if you cruise at lower RPM,...

LoL,
Yeah, there is a pressure/minimum density thing that keeps the deep water from freezing, but I thought you were selling the Century.

Re: To Flush, or Pull the Plug
Two reasons alluded above.
1) Rust, silt or other debris can keep all the water from draining.
2) In some engines there are places that don't drain reliably. Chris Craft Q intake manifolds for example.
I start by draining, then fill with antifreeze to protect against any water left behind.

Re: porpoising 1959 cc ski boat
Generally you would need to move the center of gravity or adjust the motor angle. Not really an option with an inboard. You can add trim wedges at the stern to push the nose down. It will cost you some speed but keep the ride flatter.

Re: Going to build a shop.
Are you saying that I should pour the entire floor with insulation underneath? If you are going to heat it, even a little bit, and run a humidifier, yes a layer of foam under the entire concrete floor. You need to keep the moisture from escaping and not have a huge cold surface for condensation. Yo...

Re: Going to build a shop.
If there is no water in the ground, the floor won't make a difference. Also concrete conducts water fairly well which is a bigger problem. I would suggest a concrete floor with at least light insulation and a vapor barrier underneath. You will then be able to run a humidifier without the floor sucki...

My 1962 plywood inner and plank outer bottom without CPES and without 5200 is still in decent shape after more than 5 decades with not so great care for all of them. I would expect a well cared for and well done 5200 bottom to outlast anyone old enough to buy one.

Ethanol is a game changer. It actually helps absorb moisture to a point, but then it separates. Non-ethanol fuel, store filled with high octane premium fuel to avoid moisture from any air space from building up condensation. If you have ethanol in the fuel, store as close to empty as possible. Ethan...

V drive is either a 1969 or 1970. From the pictures, it looks like it is very weathered and uncovered. I would plan on a very complete restoration job and assume you will end up spending more than you will be able to sell it for unless you do a lot of work yourself. If you look you will see a few co...
