Re: Help staighten cast brass windsheid

If this really was brass it would probably be soft enough to take a cold bend. However, this is bronze which is an alloy of brass and is much stronger and therefore tougher and prone to cracking. Kiitos is right, go to an expert and see what they can do. I strongly suggest you do not try to straight...

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie

As an owner of a '56 Connie 46' I will say that you are getting some very good advice here. I only wish I had your Detroits instead of my 401 Buick's. Your diesels were built to run all day wide open as others have suggested. My first reaction is to say that if you only plan on easy cruises like we ...

Good point robertpaul! I have also found that in the cruisers, I can always find a bit of rot right under the galley sink drain! Every time!

Re: Sea Skiff TEmp Bottom Fix

That would probably work Joanroy but if it delaminated there I suspect more of the area is ready to go. If that plan is used the I suggest you inject as much CPES as possible into the area. I think the original plan would be safer. I have done many of these planks and they arent that bad but they re...

Re: Fiberglass Covered Hull Leak

I am afraid that I agree with the serious cautions you have already received. I do not know where you live but you should check your Federal, State and or Provincial regulations. In Canada you would face criminal charges for putting out in a boat you know to be unseaworthy. The safety regulations a...

Re: Fiberglass Covered Hull Leak

You are right. You didnt say "go boating". I dont often comment on other peoples advice but in a case of serious safety issues, which this is, I had to say something. As a former Coast Guard rescue crewman who has pulled numerous bodies out of the water I get concerned when I see this type of situat...

Wood boat with fiberglass over it, a split in the glass, clear signs of separation of the glass from the wood. That is the only photo I need to say that you have serious safety issues here.

If someone paid to have this done then its not acceptable. If, as you say, the owner did it himself then dont worry about it.

Re: Cracks in plank? Acceptable or not?

Can you find out what finishes they used? I am very suspect of an "automotive finish" on a runabout. The cracking is a concern. Have you talked to the restorer? I have never had that happen on a boat we restored but if it did I would immediately offer to replace that plank.

Re: 1950 U22

The whole "turning them into bars" thing is getting out of hand. It is so easy to build any boat you want as a replica that I cant see cutting up a boat! If the transom is good enough to turn into a bar, then the remainder of the boat is salvagable. This is a finite resource so why waste it? If you ...

We have had good results removing with heat. The board works fine for the numbers but not for the name on a transom. Of course the only way to do it perfectly is to strip.

Re: Registration numbers under varnish need changing

I would try a heat gun and scraper, start on low heat and test it out first. Pass the heat over an area carefully until the varnish starts to lift then carefully scrape. We remove stickers and old varnish this way, and we never use chemical strippers. I know what heat does to the wood but I have no ...
