refresher varnish coat
Hi Jim, If it were mine I would just top coat it. I don't mind a little yellowing of my deck seams it gives them some age patina but, that's just me. On the other hand if you remove the paint prior to your topcoat you might compromise the 10 coats you already have there. Although if you repaint the ...

Strut Bushing
Hi Brian, In your pic your replacement looks like the rubber part of the bushing is missing, I have never seen a bushing without the grooved rubber part. You most certainly don't want metal to metal contact there  . To remove the old bushing it's easier to cut a slot in it carefully w/ a saws...

Leak
Hi,
You can use Boatlife caulk. It's a poly-sulfide which will cure under water. The trick is to find out where the leak is in a double plank hull. The water can travel quite a ways between the two layers b/4 it comes in.

Steve, I used the oxalic acid wood bleach in the granular form bought at a home center. I stir it into hot water, adding it until it stops dissolving (ignoring the instructions  ). Then you know you have a real hot mix! I continued to cover the whole area w/ each application. The b/4 pics are p...

Hi Steve, Last spring I refinished the fir deck on my cruiser that looked very much like what you have there. Some of it I may have bleached four or five times. Judging from the looks of the hatch cover you are pretty close. I wasn't going for a perfect finish but, I was really pleased with the end ...

Hi Chuck, You could try www.classicboatconnection.com The didn't have that size listed on the site but, it said to call for other sizes. Also www.classicboating.com they have that size listed. The hacksaw trick is a good way to remove the strut bearing. If you are careful, a sawzall works faster. Th...

According to some specs. I have the K-motors between ser.#21142 to 21300 had 85HP. The K's had 100HP after ser# 204761 and b/4 #204762 they had 95HP. The 100's and the 95's had different heads having different compression ratios. The bore on the 85's is 3 3/8" where the others is 3 7/16". compressio...

Hi Pete, Glad to hear she fired right up :D . If this engine sounds good w/ no bearing knocks I would say it is quite servicable as is. I would just check the compression in the cylinders, blow a paint job on and tune her up and go. That smoke should clear up after the oil burns out of the cylinders...

Engine Stored
Hi Pete, Yes the oil in the carb is a good thing. In the process of fogging an engine you pour a light oil in the throat of the carb while the engine is at a high idle until it chokes out. That coats the internals (valves, rings, cylinder walls etc.) A film of oil on the external parts prevents rust....

'47 Express Cruiser
Hi Mike, I owned a '47 23' express cruiser many years ago, in fact it was my first cruiser. It was given to me by my grandfather at the age of thirteen. I had the most fun w/ that boat for many years into my twenties. Then I traded her for a '54 20' Century Resorter. I wish I had the old Chris today...

Matt is right, these wood cruisers have more class in their sternpost than a plastic Sea Ray has in the whole boat. I consider myself fortunate to have bought my latest 28'er for 4000. three years ago. She's a go boat, not a show boat but, I would rather be seen on her than any piece of tupperware a...

Hi, Your pump might have bronze impellers. You can tell that by the grease cups on the pump. If thats the case just make sure there is sufficient grease (water pump grease) and give them a couple of turns to push some in and go. Al and John both made very good points. The 5gal. bucket water supply i...

Cradle for 52' Connie
Hi Carl, A cradle for something of this size is going to be quite a large affair, not something you are going to be able to move once you build it. The stringers will be somewhere in the 36' range in length. In wood these would probably be triple 2X10's w/ ply in between. I would say a steel I beam ...

You could try www.jcwhitney.com for the window tracks. It's an auto parts supplier but, they quite a selection of different types. I'll bet you can match something up.

Hi Christian, In my opinion, a proper storage cradle is best. A frame w/ stringers 14' long, two bolsters and a center support should be fine for a 26'er. Make sure the bolsters line up w/ frame members. You would have to custom fit it to the boat. It takes some time but, fitted properly, would prov...

Packing Wrench
Hi,
Just go down to your local plumbing supply and ask for a packing wrench. You can find them at a marine supply but, they are probably more expensive there.
