Re: CC spotlight advice

John, that appears to be the same type that I had on my Connie. I had it apart 6 or 7 years ago but can't remember any details now. I remember that all was a tight fit and possibly had some corrosion that had to be broken loose before the reflector part came out. After cleaning and polishing all the...

Re: The Brass Bell - Issue 2015-4

Strange that you received 2 of them. Anyone else experiencing this? I received my single copy yesterday, 12/29/2015. Again, the BOD is very sorry that these are arriving so late, due to the sudden and tragic loss of our beloved "Mangling" Editor, Bill Baldwin in mid October. Thankfully, Jim Frechett...

The Brass Bell - Issue 2015-4

Issue 2015-4 of The Brass Bell is in the hands of the USPS a bit later than usual this year due to the tremendous loss of our loving "Mangling" Editor, Bill Baldwin in mid-October. Due to late delivery in the midst of the Holiday Season we have posted The Brass Bell - Issue 2015-4 online earlier tha...

Good to see that you are still making great progress. Ah, one always needs a safe, convenient place for bottles to be tucked in. Good use of otherwise wasted space. Keep up the good work. And keep us posted!

Re: Final Sand Grit Prior to Stain???

When finishing the bright work on the cruiser I didn't go beyond 80 or 100 grit and applied Interlux 573 Chris-Craft Mahogany stain and then as many coats of Schooner varnish as it took to accomplish a mirror finish, sanding with 220 between coats. In a couple of areas I sealed after staining with C...

Re: Chris Craft and Quality Control

I agree that he's spreading compound after another look. I thought that both hands were down there on a wrench but unless one arm is much longer than his other that's not possible. The photo has me wondering if the boats moved after every step from crew to crew, or the crews moved from boat to boat....

Re: Chris Craft and Quality Control

I believe the worker is installing the rudder in the barrelback. The string laying over the aft deck may be for packing that fitting. This has been a very interesting and informative topic. Possibly the only true craftsmen were the ones that laid out and fabricated the patterns from 2-dimentional en...

Re: Chris Craft and Quality Control

Quality control may have been a lesser priority on areas of a Chris-Craft boat that aren't visible. None of the craftsmen who built them would have anticipated that 60-plus years later someone may notice. The 1948, 17' runabout that I helped remove the original bottom revealed similar variations in ...

Re: 19' commander/xk19

If it is indeed a Commander, it would be a 1969 model. The boat was transferred to the Corsair Division in 1970 and was marketed as the Corsair XK-19 from 1970 - '75. Both V-Drive and Stern-Drive Commander models were available in 1969, and as Corsair models in 1970. Later Corsair models ('71-75) we...

Re: Any suggestions for a forgiving varnish?

Truth is that most of us non-pros prefer a certain brand of varnish because we started out learning the art using it, and not some other brand. Most all top brands (Epifanes, Pettit, Interlux, etc.) make quality products that perform well. But each seem to be different enough to cause the one that w...

Re: Meranti Mahogany

The "mixed results" probably comes from the inconsistency in density found in Meranti as compared to the Philippine variety. The wood near the center of the log is apt to be weak and brittle. So quarter-sawn boards could be difficult to bend evenly and may crack on the side closer to the log center....

Re: can't log into wiki or other areas of the site

Due to our Classic Boat Wiki being frequently vandalized by non-members we have attempted to "lock it down", obviously to no avail as vandals still manage to "get in" and change things. We need to consider changing this to another type of benefit, or abandon it as a lost cause. A tremendous amount o...

I can't say for a fact that age didn't have anything to do with my decision. I'm only 73 and feel that I could still keep up with most 50 year old guys, but! Well, Bobby, I know the feeling all too well, having found a new care taker for our baby Connie (1960, 27'). We built some great memories cruising The Mississippi in her for several years. Of course, we spent our fair share of time maintaining her in home port too. But, of course, it all added up to...

We wish you the very best in finding a new care-taker (owner) for your 1947, 17' Deluxe Runabout.

Hi Lynn, Welcome to the Club and to Boat Buzz. To answer your question, the forward frames are curved to form a convex shape in the forward portion of the bow. The keel should be flat from the transom forward, then it curves to form the bow. Yours has a step in the shear but the higher shear should ...
