Re: Where do I stop with the varnish at the water line

Well, I am not totally sure about that. In our case, a 38, we replaced the original bottom, the pencil lines were still there. When launched the boot stripe was probably a couple inches above the “true” water line. As for varnish, etc. I believe in general the bottom is painted first, and then the v...

Re: Old subject. Oil recommendations. 'W' motors.

good advice about not skimping on oil. I have used chevron delo 400 30 weight at the recommendation of my mechanic ever since he rebuilt my 1938 KA engine a number of years ago. Before retiring, Jim McNeilly of McNeillys marine service was a top pre-war engine rebuilder in the country. So I have lis...

have to be some "horn" guys in the old auto restoration game. might try to tap into that group. Hershey, Pa. is the main swap meeting I gather for old car parts, too.

how about some pix of your boat?

Re: Rough Condition & Worsening...

that's a great looking model. As far as I know, cc never used african mahagony, but only phillipine. Generally african is darker with a more pronounced figurative grain pattern. You can check it out by looking at century runabouts, for example. If it is part of the painted area of the boat it should...

Re: 1930 26' model 111 CC "Contessa"

the a 120 had some design issues. whether you want to include one depends on how serious you are in wanting originality and willing to pay for it and put up with it. Not sure how much sense it makes to use another vintage engine that was not an option and not related to that model boat? a lot of peo...

Re: Ignition keys

Yes, cc went to yale after they did separate instruments rther than the instrument panels that typically included a clum switch, etc. California classic boats makes nice reproductions. for the real thing, the best place to look is various car swap meets like hershey, pa. etc. good luck in that dept.

I cant remember how mine was done by the restorer. plugged outside the hull somehow so that interior still had an authentic look. i assume that capping the end of the copper tube would work but best to talk to someone with some expertise as to the best way to do it.

Re: 1948 16ft Runabout what is it

There have been lots of debates on woody boater.com about the Risks of self bailers.theprudent thing is to do is to disable the thing before you wakeup some morning and find your boat at the bottom of the lake.

I should add that 6 volt bilge pumps are available and highly desirable as a substitute.

If that is all you are trying to accomplish, perhaps you can deck again using mahogany plywood, bleaching the one area and making false seams as you want elsewhere, with live seams as required?

Re: Restoring Deck

Should add it is mahogany. Also there is considerable debate as to exactly what the bleached areas should look like. This was evident in the Tahoe concours a few years ago featuring blonde deck runabouts. Mike, maybe you have a suggestion here as well. (Some decks end up looking too yellow or somewh...

The first entry in this category has some good inforMation from don Ayers. Re: Is this a Yale jr. ignition switch

No key expert but I think until the later 30’s cc generally used the clum switch and then migrated to the Yale. Calif. classic boats,I think, makes reproduction Yale ignition lock set ups. Probably should add that I think the change to Yale related to changes from instrument panels to individual gau...

Re: KL oil quantity

I am no motor expert but something doesn’t ring true here. What is the source of the “specs” that suggest variable oil capacity from 6 to10 qts. ? I have a prewar ka and it has a 4 qt. capacity. The kL I believe is just a longer stoke version of the k. Maybe 5 sounds right. I can’t imagine a recomme...

I am only going on the picture contained in Conrad’s book. Not sure I have ever seen one before, or ever heard of it for that matter. Hard to tell whether there are transom bandsor not? Best to discuss with other owners. The special was apparently made in 53 & 54. Looks perhaps like an economy model...

Re: Polished Stainless Steel Flat Stock

I believe all of the sportsmen, except perhaps the special sportsman, had transom bands.

The standard placement was on the hull sides with about 1/4” or so space between the band and the end of the hull sides. Nothing on the “corner” or the transom.
