Well, if that's the case that would be great. Thanks for your help! Mike

Re: 6V to 12V Generator conversion

Thanks Mark, I'll try that.
Yes, I attached a picture - I do have a wire from the amp meter that goes back to the starter (red cloth wire).

Re: 6V to 12V Generator conversion

Thanks, Mark.. yes, you are right....I meant AMPS. I have not measured the output from the generator yet. Wasn't quite sure how to do that... The generator has a "cut-out" (silver small box) on top of it with a black wire going into the generator from the cut-out and another wire going from the cut-...

6V to 12V Generator conversion

I have a 1950 CC Sportsman (18ft) and recently upgraded from a 6V to a 12V generator. The work was done by a reputable shop. When I start up and get the RPM's up a little, the generator kicks right in and charges around 18V on the voltmeter..sometimes it gets to 20V. After about 10-15 minutes, it dr...

Re: K engine - no spark (1954 Sea Skiff)

Thanks for all the help everyone - I finally figured it out. The small bolt that holds the wire from the coil to the distributor was "grounding out" on the distributor body. The "insulation" piece that goes around the bolt was gone so I put a fiber washer there instead. Works great. :D

Re: K engine - no spark (1954 Sea Skiff)

I guess it's possible the points are bad, but a bad condenser should not affect whether there is a spark or not...from my understanding of what a condenser does.

Re: K engine - no spark (1954 Sea Skiff)

Good point, and yes, it's identical to the one I replaced and I purchased it from Chris-Craft connection. But, I should still be seeing a "spark" between the points even with the cap off. I'm not seeing anything happening there even though the points are opening and closing as they should. I'm quite...

Re: K engine - no spark (1954 Sea Skiff)

Thanks. Yes, that works...so it appears I have good connectivity to the cap. Not sure why I can't get a spark.

Re: K engine - no spark (1954 Sea Skiff)

Thanks for your thoughts and help - I have continuity between the coil and distributor but still no spark. I feel like there may be a "grounding/short" issue somewhere. When I began troubleshooting and took off the bolt that connects the coil wire to the distributor body and attaches to the points/c...

Re: K engine - no spark (1954 Sea Skiff)

Thanks Jim. No, I'm not getting a spark from the coil wire...should I actually be seeing a spark if I pull it from the distributor cap?

K engine - no spark (1954 Sea Skiff)

I have a 1954 CC Sea Skiff with a K engine that has not been run in about 4 years. About 5 years ago the engine was rebuilt by a very reputable mechanic and ran nicely. When I purchased the boat 2 months ago I could not turn the engine. It had sat for too long and the valves were stuck. I was succes...

Re: 1954 22ft Sea Skiff Displacement weight

Thanks! yes, I actually wanted the weight for lifting the boat off the trailer to build a cradle. I made an overhead hoist and want to put an electronic winch on it to lift the boat. Just wanted to estimate the lifting capacity I needed for the winch. Sorry, mixing up terminology!

Re: Hand turning a Chris Craft K engine

That is really helpful, thanks! I'm sure I can fabricate something that will fit in the boss hole and turn it. Thanks for so clearly describing which way the "standard" rotation turns, counter-clockwise as I'm looking at the fly-wheel. I put a long screw driver between 2 of the fly-wheel bolts for l...

Hand turning a Chris Craft K engine

I recently "rescued" a really nice 1954 CC Sea Skiff (22ft) that just needs some TLC. I know the engine was rebuilt 4 years ago and has only 5 hrs on it. I have pulled the plugs and put some Mystery Oil in the cylinders and now want to slowly hand turn it over. Any advice on how best to turn it? See...

Wood repair in Virginia

I have a 1950 CC 18"ft Sportsman and when pulling her out of the water onto my trailer (for a transmission repair), the forward roller of the trailer damaged the bottom. I have only owned the boat 3 months and it looks like the previous owner tried to repair some soft wood with a fiberglass patch of...

Re: KL engine clutch adjustment

No, straight 30W. But thanks. After tightening the adjustment collar 3 holes, I think the forward clutch plate is worn and will need to be replaced. I spoke to Dave at Van Ness Eng. and he offered great advice and confirmed that is most likely the issue. I may use the boat for the remainder of the s...

Re: KL engine clutch adjustment

I have the same issue on my 1950 18ft Sportsman. At approximately 2500 rpm, the engine revs high and if falls out of gear. I adjusted the collar clockwise by 1 hole with no difference, 2 holes with nothing and then 3...still no difference, if anything it got worse and only gets to 2000 rpms before d...

Thanks to everyone for your replies...very helpful. I do have an engine with the plug as you described so I will start doing some more research on where to get a manual gauge and how best to install it. Thanks again! Mike

Adding a Temp gauge to a CC 105hp "K" engine

I recently purchased a 1950 18' CC Sportsman w/ a 105hp "K" engine and would like to add a engine temp gauge. Any suggestions on how to go about purchasing one and installation thoughts? Not being able to monitor the temp, as a former helicopter pilot, makes me a little uneasy! Thanks-Mike
