Yup , Matt is right, Kind of like Beer , Miller, Bud, Import , it is what you are comfortable with and all will get the job done. Most or all varnish problems or fails are due to other factors and they do not include the varnish . Books have been written about the proper ways to varnish and prep.

Re: 1955 17 ft Chris Craft alignment

I saw an old time fix this condition 25 years ago. He put a bottle jack between the trans and stringer and cranked it over. I said what are you moving to make this work and the answer is the lag bolts. He also had a pipe wrench welded to a 8 foot bar that he put on the strut to tweak it . A bit extr...

Slick seam is made of 78% blended waxes and saturated hydrocarbons
. To save money you can use melted down old toilet wax rings to fill your cracks for a leaky bottom .

Re: 5200 Bottom. Space planks??

I did my first bottom in 1992 following Don's method with leaving a gap between bottom planks. I use a popsicle stick between planks during fit up . The nice thing with the gap is you can see the 5200 ooze out when you screw down the bottom planks . This assures complete evacuation of air and builds...

48609 Preserve Plan

I am finally done with customer boats and will be getting this 19 footer ready for the international boat show. This 19 foot barrel was originally delivered to Montréal Canada in 1939. I will do the minimal amount of restoration in order to get the Chris to be a user preserved survivor boat. To date...

Thanks for the information, but I already ordered the materials and tools . Making complete spring seating units in the morning for the 19 foot runabout, I have a sample 18 foot seat bottom to use as a guide, and another 19 footer to look at. Any tips appreciated!

Re: Awful Discovery, a Crappy 90's Restoration Job

I can beat that crappy job, had a 19 foot barrel come in for a bottom. Boat had dry wall screws added next to the original brass screws . All fasteners were disintegrated and the frames were cracked, stretched, and full of rust. A absolute mess, the boat must have glowed in the lake.

Ok, I dropped the bottom piece of the dash , what can be seen is the original stain was Chris Craft red on this boat. Back of dash, I am going to remove the lower wood piece of the dash board from the back. It is cracked and was repaired with a small piece of metal as a splint . I will remove the nuts and metal brass angles on the lower instrument panel to relive the tension.

I have been asked to check the 48609 19 foot Chris Craft Barrel dash board for original stain color. The complete dash panel wood is dark from oxidation and age.

I am ok with putting in leather, but just want to see some proof that it was the standard material. You could get a 19 footer with a K engine to save cost in a barrel back.
