Re: KBL , at the end of its life?

Are you running points or Pertronix ?

You may have a bad coil that is overheating and breaking down.

There are known defected batches of coils manufactured overseas.

Re: Plywood inner planking

Hi Jim,

For reference my 1953 Rocket had original bottom plywood (along with canvas and planks).

Pattern is shown in the photo.

I would think the sportsman would be the same as the Rocket as the hulls are the same - the Rocket is decked over.

Re: 1956 17' Sportsman Steering and Choke rigging

The attached photo is from my 1953 Rocket which is a similar hull to the 1956 Sportsman. In the foreground there are two pipes coming from the aft of the boat. The one on the left goes to the chrome shift lever and the one on the right goes to the pitman arm of the Gemmer steering box. The thinner h...

Try adding more oil - a little at a time until it holds full pressure and stops dropping. You are probably right on the edge of the correct level.

Re: 1956 17' Sportsman 5200 Bottom

I used Charles E Pike and Sons sawmill in Hampton CT (white oak is the state tree of CT).

They have experience with marine wood cutting.

That was 10 years ago so no guarantee they are still around.

Re: 1956 17' Sportsman 5200 Bottom

Yeah the joy of restoration. The keel, chines and lower transom frames were similar on my runabout. The problem with the chines is there are so many screw holes that it weakens the wood. See if your source for white oak can source long enough single pieces. Maybe a local sawmill ? That worked for me...

Re: 1956 17' Sportsman 5200 Bottom

Your calculations are accurate for both the plywood thickness and bottom planks. I actually used 5/32 marine plywood and 3/8 inch thick planks. 4MM is very close to 5/32. You could do a practice "sandwich" that will mirror your actual bottom from scraps and 5200 and test the thickness against your k...

Re: Ammeter Wiring

One is IN and the other is OUT. Not sure but you could try the one on the right as IN and left as OUT. The wire from your generator or alternator goes to IN and your loads (lights, bilge pump, blower, etc.) wire to OUT. If you wire it backwards nothing bad will happen it just will display positive w...

Re: 1956 Sportsman 17 K Engine Prop shaft length

Those motor mounts should give someone a clue as to what motor was in there. Unfortunately I only know K. Check your prop. Shaft. It should be 1 inch diameter also. You have a sportsman so only so much wiggle room under the motor cover. Also, your aft limit is the prop. hitting the rudder. If your r...

Re: 1956 CC Sportsman Rudder Removal

The vertical square that you see inside the clamp is actually the top of the rudder post. It is not threaded into anything. Loosen the horizontal bolt and nut that is squeezing the clamp and then also loosen the large stuffing box nuts. Inside the stuffing box there is packing which may be stuck to ...

Re: Can’t figure it out!

Well mine is solved. I added a half quart of oil and went out and the gauge started swinging between 25 and 35 lbs which was an improvement. After that I added another quarter quart and it went right to 40 lbs and stayed there solid. My theory is the oil pump running full pressure at startup but whe...

Re: 63 Sea Skiff Sportsman dead electrical system

Anything that is conductive and has resistance - including wire - that is connected to your battery will draw some small amount of current. That is the reason for the cutoff switch (amongst others). Your battery needs to be maintained even if out of the boat. Keep it out of moist areas (like a concr...

Re: 63 Sea Skiff Sportsman dead electrical system

Absolutely. Any one of your accessories (loads) could draw a trickle charge. Very cold weather is not good either. I have installed a marine cutoff switch in line between my battery and loads to avoid this and as a safety measure (no accidental overheating etc. of any loads). You could do this or re...

Re: 63 Sea Skiff Sportsman dead electrical system

0.6 milliohms is basically a short so the shunt is not open and not your issue. You could have a bad ignition switch or a dead cell in your battery. To test the switch you will have to connect the battery and measure the DC voltage before and after the switch (switch in ON position). You could also ...

Try Jim Staib. Finewoodboats.com.

Be caerful with ACME. I bought one and the larger blades hit my rudder.

If you do buy one try and get a stock part that is returnable.

Re: Can’t figure it out!

I am not going to hijack this post but I have the same exact issue. So far I have tested my gauge (good), blew the copper line out, and dialed the oil pump up to 40 lbs via the access plate. My next move end of season is to pull the engine and replace the oil pump as it is the only engine part that ...

Yes they make a thermostat for the KL. It worked fine when I used it. Just make sure you know that i...

Re: Navigation / Anchor Switch Wiring

Well yes if you turned both the Navigation and Anchor switches on you would double feed the Anchor light but who would do that in an either or scenario ?

Also in your diagram you wrote "Up is off for both switches" but that is not how you drew the Anchor switch. Up is on in your diagram.

If this is correct then run the switched side of the navigation switch to both fore and aft lights. Then wire the switched side of the anchor switch to just the aft...

If you buy a used one then you need to make sure that the standoffs will hit your spray rail. If not then you may have to re-drill and re-locate. If you cannot find the mahogany colored 3 step version there is a white 4 step which is similar. https://www.greatlakesskipper.com/garelick-boat-gunwale-h...

I used Klean Strip. It is a gel and stays in place pretty well. It may take multiple applications to get down to bare wood. You can apply it with a cheap chip brush. Only stroke in one direction. IF you go in both directions you can speed up the evaporation process and reduce the effectiveness. A na...

The by the book repair would be to strip and remove all of the topside planks, inspect all frames and if good plug all the screw holes with dowels. Then CPES back side of planks and exposed frame surfaces. After that re-install the planks tight with all new fasteners. You will end up with a gap unde...

Re: Generator charging 15 volts

Okay so the exact voltage depends on your battery type (e.g. lead acid, AGM, etc.). You can google your type and recommended charging voltage but I did not see anything over 14.4V DC as a recommendation. The good news is that you can adjust the generator voltage yourself. It is not that difficult an...

No matter how you plug it you should turn the through hull around in case your plug fails.

Maybe plumbers putty ?

You should be able to get light sockets from Jim Staib (finewoodboats.com). He may have the holding brackets too. I see you already have a fuse block to get power from. Your lights should be fused too. I am sure your fuse block works but I prefer the marine rated ones with plastic covers. Safer opti...
