Sounds like a bad deal, as far as a law suit is concerned it's a crap shoot at best. Best case scenario you get some of your money back....worst case you lose a bundle more. Personally I would keep my dog out of that fight, it's a rodeo you may want to avoid.

The stuffing box is freshly packed, when the tranny is in neutral you cannot turn the prop with your hands, it's tight. When running it shifts fine and forward and reverse gears work fine. So am I correct in thinking that when in neutral I should beable to rotate the prop with my hands without to mu...

Prop shaft

I am thinking my motor alignment is off. Should I beable to turn my prop by hand, I cannot turn mine it's tight, I am guessing that is also the reason I can't get any RPM out of the engine. How free should the prop shaft be. Thanks for any advice I can get.

Just buy long blocks, I put two 350 Chev long blocks in my 61 CCC, not only are the 350's more powerfull they are cheap. All I did was order one without a cam shaft and I put in a counter rotating cam, you can get those from comp cams. You will be very happy with the 350's.

Wow interesting problem, my guess would have to be the carb, maybe the float setting depending on the carb could do this.

The alignment seems good there is no vibration, I am thinking it has to be something between the stuffing box and cutlass bearing, you cannot turn the prop by hand while she is on the trailer without a lot of effort, "a lot". The bottom is not a new 5200, and I do not know how she was when last in t...

No speed no rpm

Well I got my newly restored 1947 U22 Sportsman launched on July 1st as planned. Everything seems fine with the exception of the fact the engine will not make any rpm, the max speed right now is about 10 to 12 miles and hour. How much rpm should the Chrysler M engine make and what speed should a boa...

Larry electric is way simpler and much more reliable than mechanical. Normally you would advance the throttle to the full position to set the choke in the closed position, then bring the throttle to just off idle and crank the engine, once started the choke should gradually open as the engine warms ...

Generator hook ups

Hi guys I could use a little input with respect to the generator hook up on my 47 U22. I was wondering if anyone has a schmatic or just advise where the wires are to go. Sure looks like a great deal of rust and corrosion. That sure can cause improper operation. I would be tempted to give that unit a good blasting of brake clean followed up with a splash of WD40 on the moving parts.

Let me concur with Jim, I only use electric chokes on my three marine V8's. I use the Edelbrock version of the marine cab and the chokes on all three work flawlessly. Its also pretty easy to convert to the electric choke for most carbs.

Jim is dead on, the use of unleaded fuel will not make any difference to your 440. If you ever decide to take her apart for any reason your machinist will install hardened exhaust seats in the head. For a marine application I would not even use an additive, all its really doing is adding pollution t...

I would like to hear if there was a back fire through the carb. If there was and it is a Holley carb then the power valve has been ruptured and it will be dumping fuel into the intake. To fix it you will have to pull the float bowl and change the power valve that is screwed int the metering plate. N...

Jim has great posts, if its timed properly and the spark is hot then yes the next step is the carb and fuel system, Jim's post covers those pretty well. If it ran fine before the you had the dist out then my guess would be dist related. Its not a bad idea though to have your carb rebuilt and freshen...

Your problem sounds electrical. Timing a BB Chev engine is pretty easy. There should only be two ways the dist goes back in. As mentioned on the last thread you have to bring #1 cylinder up to TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke. Like was mentioned take #1 plug out and put your finger in...

Does not sound like fuel sounds electrical. fuel would cuase the back fire unless the engine is really flooded, if that was the case she would of been beltching black out of the exhaust. If she ran fine at first then started to act up check the coil, when a coil fails the engine runs fine until the ...

One other note the 4 bbl carb would tend to suggest a higher performance engine. A higher performance engine in that time period probably had a solid lift cam. Be very careful with what you are doing here, while its true most 283's were hydraulic lifters that probably has more to do with automotive engines. Marine engines are different. I cannot comment on which SBC engines had either solid or Hydraulic systems back in the day. But before you ruin a cam an...

Pertronix Cube and Timing

Just a point of clarification, a Pertronix cube's only function is the replacement of the points condensor and often the ballast resistor. It simply controls the power going to the rotor and from there to the plugs. It is not possible for the Pertronix cube to have any affect on the actual ignition ...

Timing can only be affected by physically moving the dist or changing the springs in the distributor that control centrifical advance. Your problem sounds tran...
