Set screws on shaft support
1956 Chris-Craft holiday 18 feet -- I am getting ready to change the strut bearing, and am amazed there are no set screws, indicating this is a press fit only. Can someone confirm that, please. Any leads on the best place to purchase a Cutlas bearing? Thanks

Ouch! Easy fellas, let me try to explain with a little more detail. I'm full-time here, I don't go to Florida, but a lot of people do. I watch several houses for people when they go, and this is where I got the idea. Garages here in the steep areas are built into the hillside, henceforth, sometimes ...

Block heater
Bill, for what it's worth, I'm here in the Finger Lak es Western New York State. I keep my 56 utility, small block Chevy in my garage all winter. Inside the motor box I keep two 60 W bulbs running continuously. Never a problem, unless your bulbs burn out while you're swimming down at Marco Island. T...

Tinting sealer with copper bronze paint
Gentlemen, I have heard that adding several ounces of copper bronze, into the sealer will help the adhesion of the copper bronze. And it will will help to tint the sealer which is 2018 Pettit clear. Can anybody verify?

CC cradle specs
Good morning gentlemen; This winter my decks are going to be restored. I am in need of the cradle specs for my 56' Holiday, 18' utility. Anyone have that info or a lead? With the small block it scales about 2100 lbs. Recommendations welcomed on casters.

Jim, one little trick you can do prior to launch is put only a couple of inches of water in the boat and take note of the dripping. Sort of a pre-soak at home, but do not put alot of water, it is too much weight. As water drips out, replace it, set the trailer jack to level the boat, then to lower t...

Shaft removal
Jim, the most likley reason for the misalignment is that your hull is drying out and changing shape. You may have to put her back in the water with everything done except the final bolt up to the tranny, and be sure to snug up the stuffing box. Was it soaked up when you took her apart? Where have yo...

fuel tank
Guys, clearly we all have too much time on our hands. This is not brain surgery, or is it? Simple and foolproof, find out the size and shape of your tank, make it empty, add two gallons and mark on the stick "GET GAS NOW" This is the only real important mark anyway.

Craig, hello. Are the four sections of your gas stick the same size, as it appears in the pic? As I am sure you know, to divide a cylinder, half is indeed half, but 1/4 and 3/4 should be closer to 'half' than to "empty" and "full", when marked on a stick. Of course, the real important one is the 1/4...

Exhaust
Woody, I have dual exhause, with 4" copper. Both ends of the copper are connnected with a heavy rubber sleeve and double radiator clamps. Between the transom and the flare of the flange,(outside) I used a thin but firm gasket, and stainless bolts, not screws. Install after your bottom work and brigh...

Jim, on your idea, the shaft may indeed have been scored by the packing in the stuffing box, and the bend in the shaft is causing it to hang up in the shaft log. I don't know how long your socket is, but it looks like, from the pics you sent, the flange is ready to come off. Try rotating the shaft b...

Jim, lets move forward. If the shaft is sliding back and forth from the stuffing box to the tranny, then the flange is hung up on a burr or score mark, on the shaft itself. Press on slowly, get the flange off, and back the shaft out of the boat. The skeg wraps around the shaft, forming the housing f...

Jim, you look OK! Very tight area, you now need shorter bolts and maby a flatter piece if steel. The shaft should press out, might be hitting a burr from the two set bolts. Where is your shaft bent, in the middle or at the tapered, threaded end? Second choice is to loosen nuts, place solid object be...

Gent's, I just attended the Thompson annual reunion in Solon, NY just to the east of Cortland. We had a great time, pleanty of food, and alot of stories from the "ol timers". Several of the family members were on hand, and a number of people brought their Thompson's. Pics are attached or embedded? I...

Jim, you got it. Looks like you have an average amount of working room there, should be enough for the “tool” I spoke of. Separate the flange, and try to tap off the shaft side, see what happens, just don’t bend it. Remember to remove the set (2) bolts completely, they are bedded in dimples on the s...

Shaft removal
Jim; key word here is slow, slow, slow. The shaft has to come out the back of the boat. Remove prop, break open the stuffing box, remove the two set bolts in the shaft side of flange. Now the work starts. In a perfect world, the shaft backs out of the flange, and out the back of the boat. Yeah right! J...

How are you Jim? My prop guy says, don’t waste your time and money, they can’t be straightened. They usually bent at the taper, and it’s just not worth it, your drive train is too important. Here, you can get a 40”-50” X 1” for a little over $200. Don’t forget to take them the shaft side of your fla...

Ice, I run a 56 Holiday with a re-fastned origional bottom. This one soakes up tight in about three hours, and after an hour or two, it's taken on two quarts +/- not even enough to trip one of two bilge pumps. On the hoist, I pull the plug, and if I do not use the boat for a couple of days, I'll low...

Al, Thanks for your reply. I did not look forward to a slam bar anyway. A car buddy of mine said a wheel puller is the only way to go; of course there is no room. So we made a small one, and it worked very well. It’s more like a press, two heavy pieces of steel, with .5” holes 3.25” apart. Two high ...

Prop shaft removal?
Gents, I need your help! Got a bent stainless prop shaft, and can't free it from the coupling flange. Does anybody have any tricks, I just put the motor back in the boat a month ago. Not looking forward to pulling it back out. Not sure the bend will pass through the strut bering anyway. I have it so...
