Hot K exhaust elbow

I have a newly rebuilt Model K engine. The first on water test the exhaust elbow was hot and bubbled the paint and had a burning smell. Water temp gauge showed in normal ranges. I have read this is normal but does anyone have a suggestion for ways to keep the exhaust elbow a little cooler? Thanks
